Maximum Substrate Depth?
    #11095111 - 09/20/09 04:26 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

What is the maximum substrate depth before it becomes a problem?
I understand about diminishing returns, but sub is cheap. (I'm getting a black bag of shit for free.) I want to know how deep can it get before it becomes problematic.

I also understand for a bigger sub I'd need to fan more often, but I've got lots of free time... To much actually, so much I'd be growing multiple kilograms a month...

4 inches worked wonderfully for me.

You may get more flushes using deeper substrate but performance may diminish as the myc gets older and probably leaves alot of food left over (just a guess)

It would hold more moisture however and that could support larger mushrooms.

I have never gone deeper than 15cm and my results have always been good.
According to Stammets-TMC max sub depth 30cm.
Casing Layer is around 1/4 of Substrate depth to a max of 5cm.
13shrooms is correct, rather go for a larger surface area and not the sub depth.

I know I'd get diminishing returns, but I want to make the most out of the least amount of tubs. And moisture retention would be great as well.

I WANT TO KNOW THE MAXIMUM BEFORE PROBLEMS ARISE, NOT WHEN IT STOPS MATTERING MUCH!!

And after seeing a back-to-back cased and uncased grow, next to eachother, with everything else the same, I find casing is pointless:

Totally unnecessary...

Roger Rabbit has a lot of really good stuff to read around here. take a look at this link.

"Two feet of substrate would go anaerobic in the core due to no air getting in, and rot. 8" seems to be about the maximum you can go with consistent success, but it better be loose and airy if you're going that deep." SUBSTRATE DEPTH FC

even though I use monos, marthas are the shit in my opinion, lots of shelves for trays (maximum surface area) all in an enclosed controled environment. thats maximum use of space

I more major factor, it all depends on your spawn ratio big time.  the deeper your sub the faster you want it to colonize or contams will for sure take over.  I did a 5" sub depth (20 qrts of sub) with 3 quarts of spawn, yeild sucked, colonization times were very slow and didnt get second flush b4 mold.

If your going for a deep sub then at least do 1:2 ratio if not 1:1.

I want to be going for around 7", not to mention I'm going for 1:3. Not 1:6.5 like you did... Also I'll make a layer of colonized sub at the top as a barrier for contam.

just not a pure layer of colonized grains, thats like not having a lid on your grain jars.  it will contam.

mix a lil sub with it.

I have a 7" sub right now. It seems to be going without a problem.

this is a debate to me i have always had a frosting with no problems but the general census around here is that is a bad idea.

So what do you expect with the 7" sub? I'm guessing bigger fruits?

it fine as long as your tub/tray is closed off of FAE and just allow for gas exchange.  some people use poly for gas echange and it doesnt filter anything. so it contams.  I mix my sub and spawn compleatly then level it so it does have some grain on top but not a whole layer.  if it works for you then by all means continue.

Im not a risk taker so I take out any unneeded risks right away.

Nothing. I just mixed a lot of sub and didn't want to waste it. So I used all of what I had left.
