yeah it seems like the front office has done alot within the past couple years alone just to boost the team out of mediocrity.


Signing Faneca for as much money as they did was a ballsey risk, but clearly they had their intentions layed out.



The contruction of that offensive line was most impressive and instrumental to what they have now on offense.


Sanchez is good, but he was also given a great environment to be cultivated in as a budding QB.

Definitely.  His teammates say that they treat him like a veteran.  I think this is having very positive effects. 

Also, as more and more rookie quarterbacks have success early in their careers, more and more quarterbacks are going to believe in that possibility.

It's funny how within the past couple years you have more and more QB's prospering in their rookie year.  Could this be a growing trend?



From a quality player perspective, the Jets have been very smart over the past few years.  They seem to be attracted to intelligent people with a certain calmness of character.  Last year, they felt they could really make a move if they had a quarterback.  That's why they brought in Favre, and until he tore his bicep, the Jets were really on their way.  They just believed they had no option at quarterback, even thinking Favre with his arm ripped in half would be better than the 2nd and 3rd string options.


So they completely let go a quarterback who epitomized calm intelligence (Pennington) for a, to be kind, non- genius.  They had Pennington, not a bunch of backups, before they signed Favre.  I told my Jet fan friends to be careful what you wish for.  Pennington vastly outperformed Favre last year.

Unlike Bellichik who, every Sunday, can be counted on to do a full Madden on the sidelines.  I suspect that whatever problems Cleveland may have Mangini will be the least of them.

This is kinda funny.  It isn't like the Jets were last in the division before Favre tore his bicep.  Who was the coach last year?  Oh yeah, Mangini.  He either gets the blame and the credit or he gets neither.  And they sure didn't seem all that melancholy when they were 8-3.  You can't have it both ways.

I agree that getting Favre last year was a mistake.  Aside from that, though, its really hard to fault the decisions made by the GM/Mangini before signing Favre.

Maybe I am being too hard on Mangini.  Time will tell.  Quinn looks awful. 

I don't believe in Mangini.  I watched him coach for 3 years and its very boring football.  I don't think he has the nerve to be a head coach.  He has no personality at all.

And if you want to compare quarterbacks, let's compare Pennington and Sanchez this year.  I don't know on what basis you estimate intelligence, but Sanchez has shown great ability and has made very few mistakes. 

I'm really not sure why Tanny/Mangini were so against Pennington.  I always thought he should have coached last year over Clemens.  Of course Penny's arm strength and general fragility plaid a lot into that.  Almost like the Jets were going after the exact opposite with Favre.

We'll see how Miami does this year.  Not exactly a stellar start though.

I generally react badly to the whole "last minute" routine of football fans.  As in what happened in the last minute is critical and definitive.

Favre.  I understood the Jets being leery of Pennington's injury history but I was also completely mystified why they thought a washed up diva was the answer.  Not real forward looking and kind of a CYA by Tannenbaum to burn Mangini. 

Mangini is a good HC and will do well for his career.  In Cleveland?  Oy.  If he can make them credible he'll get a real job someday.  McMichael, on the other hand.........

How was Favre a mistake? Prior to him getting hurt the Jets were looking like a lock for the playoffs. The coaching staff just fucked up by letting him play hurt instead of throwing in a backup QB. But who's to say that a backup QB wouldnt have choked away the season in similar fashion

The Vikings and a healthy Favre are off to a 2-0 start :shrug:

This is true although one of those victories is against Cleveland who can't even get out of their own way at this point.  One of the backup quarterbacks you are talking about was Pennington who went to the playoffs a lot with the Jets.  Far more often than Mangini did. 

The Favre thing was a mistake because the Jets had a capable starting quarterback who knew the system.  They decided in late July / early August to bring in a qb who has never had to learn a new system before and was old.  And they had to pay him and give up draft picks. 

The qb position wasn't really fliled at the time, and rumors were saying management was leaning toward Clemens at the time just before they brought in Favre.

To me the clear choice was Pennington because of his track record when healthy. 

Favre is a legend.  I still love him and hope he does well this season.  But, with 4 games with the Bears and Packers, I don't really see it going too well for him. 

All that is unknown though.  I'll root for him until he disintegrates.

And the other was against the Lions.
I'm not saying the Vikings aren't/won't be good this year, but they have one of the easiest schedules in the fucking world.

Although that could change, the Bears may be better than I expected.

As to this whole Pennington thing: The biggest problem was exposed last week. Don't count on the guy to win a close game. It's just beyond his ability.

Are the Vikings really that improved?  They've only beaten two of the worst teams in the league.  They have no offensive line, have an old, immobile quarterback, and are playing in one of the most defensively aggressive divisions in the league.  It'll be either Green Bay or Chicago in the North I think.

The Pack took a step backwards after playing a playoff quality game against Chicago the week before.

The Bears took a huge step forward by beating Pittsburgh after losing to the Pack the week before.

If you put a gun to my head I'd say Bears, but both the Pack and Bears will have better records than the Vikings.

He won plenty of close games when Edwards coached the Jets.  Even playoff games.  The problem with Pennington may be that he can't handle getting hit.  Like Brady.

Yes I think there is a huge difference between Tavaris Jackson and Brett Favre

And Minnesota also has one of the better O-lines in the NFL, you are confused

I'm pretty sure he's referring more to their pass blocking abilities. They gave up 43 sacks last season which ranked 7th most. Then they lost C Matt Birk in the offseason and drafted a rookie to start at RT. So far, they've given up 7 sacks which is 4th most. Favre is going to have to stay upright and under minimal pressure or else.
