This thread is not about that. Its about the actual size of the mushroom FRUIT; not the stage of the fruit's development.
So YOU give ME a BAD rating for this?????

The defense mechanism wouldn't be for humans it would be from whatever commonly eats mushrooms in nature. Like small mammals and insects. Unlike people, animals and insect don't enjoy the altered state of being. After the first ingestion those bugs or animals wont be back for more lol
Like those toads that secret a hallucinogenic compound from there skin.
People lick em, animals eat them once, but wont ever eat another of the same toad again...they remember

I've been wondering about this b/c I've got a pond/creek area with good soil that stays wet all year... I'm wanting to start some shroom beds with compost, manure etc but there are raccoons, deer, and every sort of animal/bug big and small! Wondering if it'd be better to be closer to the house and near a water hose

the only thing other than us that i know of that eat things intentionally to get drunk or high are monkeys...
lemurs, gorillas, and spider monkeys eat certain fruits that induce a drunk or high...
Monkeys and people...go figure
as for the deer and rabbit thing...well my dog accidently got into my weed stash one time, didn't mean he liked it or wanted to and he surely never did it again when it was laying around...lol...but those kinds of animals eat anything...like goats
but i hear ya man!

My black rabbit is an alcoholic. But not not for budwieser or the other mass beers. She only goes for my strong IPA's LOL. I notice this because whenever I have an IPA she is all over my glass, when I drink a regular beer she doesn't even try to smell it. I have a feeling its the hops she likes!

I had a Rottweiler back in the 70's and early 80's who used to make apple wine. We had an apple tree in the back yard, and she'd jump up to pick the apples as they were ripe. She'd then bury about fifty apples in each hole she dug. A few months later, she'd dig up the apples, eat the mash, and get drunk as hell. She did this for several years, so I know it was no accident. The dog was a lush. RR

\begin ramble That's an interesting point. It's been said that bugs and rodents are not affected by psilocybin and psilocin the way that humans are. Either way humans are not a mushrooms natural predator. The best way to get to the bottom of this is to do a natural outdoor control and see if the predators only go after the mushroom when it was in early growth stages(actually, this wouldn't be conclusive but for all intensive purposes it would solve the problem) if they only eat when it's young then you could venture to say that the mushroom is protecting itself but (and I'm just guessing here) I would say that the predator will eat the mushroom regardless of size as the predator is hungry but without scientific proof there is no way of knowing.
\end ramble
