well, personally, i like teh SOS tek. it's a good way to learn casing, and if you lose a cup or two to contams, it doesn't set you back that much. plus, i can get a lot more out of 6 cups with SOS than i can with casing 3 cakes together.

i'd definitely try ryche's formula, but you might want to get a pressure cooker. i'm going to use it as soon as i can get my hands on one.

good luck. just experiment as much as possible, see what you like. some things might work better for you than others.

I don't have a steamer so I don't exactly use hawks recipe. But, I thought that the reason to use bird seed was for nutrients i could still use it somewhat. What I did was boil the seed then let it seep and cool down. Then I strained it, and used the water only,substituting the seed water for the distilled water.I only tried this once, the last time, and it worked great. I got more shrooms, and they came a little quicker.I just tried it again with my last batch one week ago, I'll see if it works again.

Hey echo, that sounds like an awesome idea. I'm definately going to do that if I decide to do BRF/Verm cakes again. Has anyone else tried this?

i use grass tea as my distiled water i just take it out of the bag when i mow my yard it works great and it makes the best agar for liquid inoculant i have ever had
