I was laying here in bed when a thought popped into my head.
A lot of people probably experience some paranoia about someone going through their home or other property when they're not around (landlord, police, burglar, etc.).
How easy would it be to set up a webcam aimed at your door from inside the appt. that upon motion detection would activate an email or phone alert along with a recorded imageof the intruder to an outside email account, as well as broadcast the webcam images to a webpage for remote viewing.
I'm sure this is a much more familiar concept to those of you more technologically oriented than me. Does anyone have suggestions where to look for hardware and software to make this work?

Great! Thanks for the reply.. I wish i had a setup like that with my previous housemates!
Hypothetically, I would wonder if someone who rented an appt. under another name would be able to send alerts without the receiving pager number or email receiver of those alerts being tracked by examination of the sending computer located in the appt.
That way the person could check his alerts before he went to the apartment, and if an intrusion by LEO, etc. was recorded he could never again return and forever avoid being tied to the apartment.

the newer ones have some pretty good software that turns on and records video when motion is activated. With better compression technology you can record for quite a while with just a few gigs free. The problem is that you have to hide it and cover the "ON" light so they can't see it.

I'm in the process of patenting this invention right now... lol. I've seen some specifically designed webcams that will actually move around on their base to record motion but this would give the camera away for sure.
