Blood Meal question
    #11086962 -

Ok, so Ive been lurking and reading everything I can on this forum for a few months, and this is my first question that I have.  Im on my first grow with Cambodians and Hawaiians using BRF cakes, and almost at full colonization, then I am spawning to 100% coir for ease since this is my first grow.  I read on a 3 year old thread that coir is a wonderful substrate for bulk, but the potency is significantly lower after the first flush.  RR then posted to the thread and said to use blood meal to correct this.  Tonight, I read a more recent thread where RR told someone that blood meal is pretty much pointless.  Im guessing the newer thread is correct.

So my question is: What can I use to ensure good potency through more than the first flush.  I would like to keep it simple, so hit me with whatever you think isn't going to be very difficult.

P.s.  Im putting 2 of my cakes in my FC without bulk to ensure spores in case bulk doesn't work out for me the first time.  Thinking ahead.

potency is mainly affected by genetics. ihave grown shrooms on the worst possible substrates and left the planet when dosed.

I have also read that, and completely agree.  But this is where I hit my dilemma.  I guess I read to much and confused myself.  If its all genetics than whats with the blood meal to increase nitrogen in coir which as Ive read helps maintain later flush potency.  Im not looking to increase the potency, just retain it through flushes.

i have never experienced a loss of potency in later flushes and havent heard of ne1 having this problem. just a loss of amount of product produced. which of course is due to the consumption of nutes.

overall i wouldn't worry about losing potency, it just realy hasn't been an issue.

Blood meal is useful in composting, but it doesn't break down quickly enough to do much in coir.
(Is my understanding of the explanations given)

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

A couple of growers posted about using blood meal, and I may have referred to one of their threads.  Once I tried it a few times with zero increase in controlled tests, I realized that fungi has no use for it unless it's been broken down during composting.

If you want to add a bit of zip to brf, add a tablespoon of gypsum to each cup of brown rice flour.  If you want an even bigger boost, use rice bran instead of rice flour.

^The man himself, lol. Thanks for clearing that up.  Bloodmeal out and Gypsum in.  Ill look into the bran, but if Im spawning to bulk, do you think it is necessary?
