Chanterelle or Lobster
    #11075238 - 09/17/09 07:45 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

OK, so I posted these pics on Mycotopia, figure try the two best ID sites I know about and see what works the best. Nothing. Not one post. Kinda disappointing really, but you guys seem to be on top of it. So here goes again. I suspect these are the biggest Chanterelles I've ever found. However, I'm slightly unsure, would like some other opinions. They certainly smell right to me, and that's a pretty distinctive smell. I'm used to finding the smaller, fragrant variety. If not a channie, I thought it might be a lobster, but it looks a bit different. Maybe just an immature specimen. Anyway, found growing under Fir.

I've found chenterelles that big in georgia.  Usually they get more pale like that when conditions are really wet and they end up getting bigger.  Also, lobster mushrooms have actual gills where chanterelles have 'false gills'.  See how the 'gills' are actually just folds kinda like fingerprints?  Real gills are individual, papery strips, whereas falsies are just folds in the carcophore.  I would wait for a second opinion as there are other mushrooms that look like chanterelles though.

You ever seen that movie Constantine.  Well they pass into hell several times.  In hell there are melting human bodies, in your tub are melting mushroom bodies.  Your tub had passed into mushroom hell.

Those are huge Chanterelles.  Very nice.  Enjoy.

And welcome to the Shroomery if no one said it yet.

Not sure where you are but they definately get that big in coastal Carolina. I'd eat them...

Notice those in the back by the can

Lobster Mushrooms dont have gills really. The mushrooms that the Hypomyces fungus takes ove often do ( i.e. Russula Brevipes, Lactarius) but by the time its a Lobster i would hesitate to say there are any gills for fear of misidentification. I normally find it to be more of a flat surface with at mosts shallow, blunt ridges, if anything. Take a hand lens and look for pore/pimple type things on the outside of the fruit. these are perithecia and are the method of spore dispersal as hypomyces are Ascomycetes.

I know its dried out in the pic but the vase shape and whats looks to me like scales make me think this is in the Gomphus (Cantharellus) Floccosus group which have been know to taste bitter and cause gastric upset in some people i would advise sampling this mushroom lightly to see if any adverse affects arise
