I was wondering what the harm of drying mushrooms by sticking them immediately in a dessicant chamber is? Is there much advantage with pre-drying them with a fan first?

No Harm.  Its just that they seem to dry alot faster if you fan dry them for 1-2 days first.  Also you save on Dry-Rid or whatever your using by fanning first.

Dessicants generally dont absorb all that much water so you would need lots of it.

Doesn't fan drying leave them open to molds though? Also, would a heater with a fan option (no heat) be ok to use to fan?

It might work, but I find that they turn blue when this is performed. They seem to oxidize a little bit before drying out completelly. Just put them infront of a fan overnight and then in the dessicant chamber in the morning. If you do perform drying merely with dessicant, you will have to dry it in the oven after each use. I would stick to a fan for 8-24 hours and then use your dessicant. This way you get more use out of it prior to drying in the oven.

What about this whole heater/fan thing? Sound ok? Also, I'm still quite paranoid about just leaving the mushrooms out in the open....

Dont fan overnight but for several hours. When I said day I meant as in about 24 house. Dont worry the fan doesnt have to be on constantly. You pretty much just need good air exchange. After the 24 hour fanning put in dessicant chamber. Mine is a tupperware shoebox with cat litter and paper towels over it. Just put your shroomies on the paper towel and close the shoebox.
