How would you know if the DEA is watching your internet activities?
    #11080438 - 09/17/09 10:21 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Say someone was doing something pretty illegal and has been using his or her computer. How would they know if the DEA was watching them. Just assume they are. How would you know?

How wouldn't you know???

Point being: the government is out to get you, and specifically you.  Always watch your back, and never become lulled into complacency.  They WILL get you, just like they did my stepsister in Kansas.

I don't think the DEA goes around watching peoples computers.

But if they did, you would not know.

If you are paranoid, reinstall the OS, use a VPN to encrypt all outbound traffic and remove all physical keystroke loggers that may be installed.

No need to smash your hard drive.  Overwriting all the bits once with 0's makes the data unrecoverable.

Don't forget to get eye implants so that the iris scanners that are everywhere- subways, clothing stores, and near the precogs- read you as a different identity.

That isn't true. I have recovered hard drives from full formats. You need to over write multiple times if you're dealing with the DEA's lab. trust me.

a full format doesn't overwrite the entire drive, all it does is clear all pointers to data sectors, the data is still there just as it was before, just no way to tell where a single files begins/ends and all its pieces lie.

peace

You'd know when a bunch of guys in full SWAT gear and automatic rifles come bashing through every opening in your house and shoot your dog.

Full formats overwrite very little of the data.  Overwriting all the bits once with 0's erases all the data.  It used to be the case that data could be retrieved after an overwrite with an electron microscope, but that was back before hard drives got so large.  Now the sector size is so small and head placement is so precise that overwriting the drive once with 0's is enough to destroy the data forever.

Even if it was possible to recover the data with an electron microscope, that process is too slow and expensive to be practical.

reinstalling the os wont help. they would just use data recovery software. that's why u use a linix live cd. the only data they would have is from ur isp.if ur using a proxy from a 3rd world country would solve that problem

netstat (network statistics) is a command-line tool that displays network connections (both incoming and outgoing), routing tables, and a number of network interface statistics.
so if the dea was looking at ur pc it would be under the connection see how it shows me connected to shoomery, wikipedia and such
