NW Washington 9-17-09 Possible Panaeolus cinctulus!

Even strolling down the sidewalk you would not have seen these gems growing from a healthy, new lawn in a new neighborhood, underneath the shade of 100ft tall trees. You had to stand almost directly above them to see 'em. And more appeared as I assumed the kneeling position.

Alan, German: Please, please do not tell me these are Panaeolina foenescii. :smile:

That one you're pointing at in pic #4.  Are those spores on the margin you think?

I'm thinking foe, but wouldn't be offended if the prints were black and I had to change my mind >:)

Several of them have what appear to be black spore deposits on the cap, and that's what changed my mind from originally thinking they were foes. It is possible that this is a mixed collection.

Agreed.  Quite possible.  Print em all and eat the brown ones now, and the black ones when you're in a comfortable and safe environment :wink:

I have just over 100 specimens. If they are cinctulus I think an exploration is in order, and the order's around the maximum quantity!

Definitely foes. In cinctulus, pay plenty of attention to the gills. Cinctulus has much more clustered gills.. When you find one you will know what I mean. Also, in the field look at the gills in the sun and many of them will put off more of a smokey color than that light brown. The first field I found Cinctulus in was covered with foes. gave up hope until the next year when I started playing ball there and found about a 10x10 patch of them. After that I was finding them everywhere. Once you pick one you won't mistake them for foes again.

Spore print appears jet black, they look like cinctulus to me anyway :shrug:

Yeah the gills looked gray, that is a good sign. Sometimes with Pan. cinctulus the gills tend to appear gray, rather than black, even all the way up to maturity.

I think they are Panaeolina foenisecii  Prints look dark walnut purplish brown on my monitor.  The quickest way to be sure is to check for ornamentation on the spores.

Trust me. They are solid dark black in person. There's only one final way to know if they contain psilocybin with the lack of gear in my pad. I post the way I do for a reason.

I sometimes use the mjshroomer technique....

1. Lay your fresh collection on either newspaper or typing paper or hell - wax paper
2. Place an electric fan fairly close to them and let them dry for 24 hrs
3. Turn on oven and preheat to about 275 degrees give or take. Once it reaches around this temp go ahead and turn the oven OFF. Place the mushrooms on tin foil then place them in the oven BUT leave the oven door 1/4 open. Let 'em dry off in there for about 10 minutes and grab 'em. They should now be "cracker dry" as the old pros say/write.

I love it.

I just took a long series of looks at 500x in a microscope at one of the spore prints (actually I scraped off spores onto a glass slide). I'm still learning terminology but oddly enough here's what I've found:
Spores vary in color and in more way than one
  A.  Approx 4/5 spores are BASICALLY black
  B.  Approx 1/5 spores are BASICALLY brown
Of the 4/5 that are BASICALLY black, there is a variation in color from the outer edge to the center. Typically, the edge is solid black and get slightly lighter moving toward the center ranging from black then very, very dark brown in the center. Some are completely black however.
Of the 1/5 that are BASICALLY brown, there is a variation in color from the outer edge to the center. There is a fair amount of variation in subtle nuances. In general, the 1/5 basically brown spores appear as follows: Most of them have a solid, definite black edging and then have a very thin dark brown edging after that then they are just brown to medium brown. There are a handful of spores that have a light brown center. This is the exception to the rule however.

Shape varies slightly among them. Some are shapes somewhat like artist's tears. Many of them are shaped like marijuana seeds. If only I had a spore shape diagram to choose from.

Additional notes as this is seeming way too important to me.... :grin:  In my microscope I can clearly see smooth edging.

Workman pointed me to looking again for smooth edges on each spore which would be another indicator of cinctulus. Panaeolina foenesecii have jagged edges on the spores. Compare the outer edge of these two images:
