wetness?
    #11076142 - 09/17/09 01:20 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

so how wet is too wet. i made a batch of 8 cakes 7 days ago and it was on the wet side, it was wet to the point where water didnt pool on it but was close, almost muddy. i got board opend one a little and it smelled pretty rank so i fashoned a tool and poked at it, to my suprise it seemed like it had formed a vermiculite cement of sorts, it was like smelly thick sedamented honey if you guys have ever played around with sedamented honey

Im going to assume that your talking about a verm/brf mix... it should be damp not wet. Stick to the common pf-tek ratio of 1/2c verm, 1/4c brf, 1/4c water... takes all the guesswork out of it. Did u sterilize the jars before incoulation? cuz the only thing you should smell is mushroomy when mycelium starts to grow... And no i havent played with sedimented honey.. who has???

I dunno if this will help but I did the brown rice verm And water mixture. When I sterilized I didn't not cover the holes with tinfoil. When I removed the jars some were noticably heavier than the others which I am assuming is the amount of water that sneaked in. They have all colonized but one with no contams. Only side note is that it took alittle longe than normal to colonize

it is a regular brf, it smells like a wet vermiculite with brf in it thats been sitting for a week, and its gross
i sterilized by boiling for and hour and 20 mins, left over night shot up the next morning.
i saved one cc and made a liquid culture last night, well see how that goes and im just gana skip the forplay with cakes and shoot up a few pounds of rye berries

Most sterilize by pressure cooking for 90 minutes.  You're boiling for 80.  There's your problem.  You need to PC them, or boil longer.

nope your wrong steam serializing is fine for BRF cakes heck I used to steam them in a pot with a shitty lid for 60 mins and never had a contamination now of course i use a PC but you dont have to use a PC for PF cakes at all.

So him steaming them for 80 should be fine thats not the prob

Man follow this rule of thumb for pf cakes. Its 2 parts vermiculite to 1 part water and 1 part brow rice flour. Mix the water and vermiculite first and well, then add the brown rice flour mix well and boom should all be good
