Drying Problems
    #1107555 - 12/03/02 05:20 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

A friend of mine is attempting to dry some mushrooms that were harvested last week. A number of large mushrooms were placed in a closed container with packets of silica gel. This didnt work...the mushrooms remained moist and furthermore now have a white fuzzy growth all over them. Is this growth mycellium and thus nothing to be worried about. Or is it mold and should they be thrown out? There is no bad smell or anything and the white fuzz easily rubs off....

It is mold. How could mycelium grow on a dead mushrooms? Wait maybe it is mycelium that is gorwing off of the dead mushroom. I dunno.

Just leave them under a fan for a day.

I'm not sure where you are located, but I have had success just air drying them on a paper towel under a not-too-hot light or next to a sunny window. Mine have been drying in about 2 days tops--without all the fancy shmancy dessicant.

probably just mycelium, but yes, make sure.
if using dessicant to dry, it's still best to pree dry in the open for like a day, as the dessicant, especialy silica gel, can only obsorb so much moisture.
In reply to:

if the mushrooms aren't dry or completely rotten, they are probably not dead yet.

Here's a Picture:

My friend lives in a very dry climate so I think he is going to fan dry them for a while THEN use dessicant. Is there anyone who doesnt think this will be safe to eat??

looks cool to me. You are lucky that your dry climate didn't effect your growing. My setup had to be so complex to keep the humidity at 90% and it was hard to keep it there. In side my place it is about 25% humidity at the most, so it is dificult.

My Friend uses casings and mists them several times a day to keep the humidity up. He attempted to grow using cakes but the humidity couldnt be kept high enough.

If it does smell, you could always give it to an enemy.

As has been mentioned before....if you have a computer you have a fan blowing warm air and can use that in a pinch. Without a dessicant the only other idea is to get dryer air than the mushrooms to circulate around the mushroom and remove the moisture.

Can't tell from your pic if what your describing is a contam or just fuzzy myc....but guessing myc???

I am all about dehydrators. They are versatile and can dry stuff quick. The only bad is too high of temps but I have yet to experince this with the one I have seen used which is your plain old hardware store plastic round deal with the plastic removable trays....

And one way to get very dry air is using Moe Howard's drying tek.
