The Coco Sock...

Coco Fiber is sold in rolls about 1/2 inch thick and 8 feet long at my local nursery.
Im wondering what it might do to a cake if I were to wrap it in a single layer of fiber and put a circle of it on top?
I assume that the cake would colinize the fiber in no time and grow some pretty hearty mushies too?

coco is non-nutritious, i would imagine it would tire the mycellium and actually cause your yields to decrease a bit, as it would need to grow vegetatively a lot longer, and gain no nutrients.

It wouldn't tire the mycelium any more than a regular casing layer does.. I say give it a try.. I bet you would get results similar to those produced by dunking.

in my opinion it would form a casing layer 0.5 inches thick covering the entire surface of the cake. if humidity was very high, like it is normally w/ cakes the casing would have no function. the myc would grow into it vegetativly and then fruit. this could provide extra water. i dont think yields would be depressed much if at all. any extra water may increase yields. cant hurt to try it peace
forget the cakes spawn a tub

why don't you just case it normally? it seems like it would be a messy blob and probably difficult to move around without spilling coir everywhere in your terr'm. i don't think yields would be noticeably higher than if you dunked and double cased.

The Coir sold in matted form has is made up of long strands and holds its form verry well... Their would be no spilling of anything....
Ill not be trying anything like this untill Jaunary because everything going right now is my Christmas batch and theirs no room for experiments...
Look for pics of this in the future though...

That sounds interesting-kind of like a furry cake koozie?? Would you get more shrooms from the sides instead of the top and bottom?

Why dont you soak the coco-fiber in poo water or grain juice instead of regular water? This would provide plenty of nutes.

You can put the whole brick in a bowl, and boil water, pour it in and soak. It'll soften soon enough. CHeck out the great info on this amazing casing material: http://www.mycotopia.net/discus/messages/5/4290.html?1010127026

This could be nifty to use as a normal casing layer, just cut to shape and place it over the substrate. An even casing layer, no doubt!

That's a helluva idea!! I guess they would be microwaveable. Now if I can just get it prepasteurized, I'm all set.
