uhm..i'm perplexed..a stranger just gave me $4000.
    #11073226 - 09/16/09 09:55 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I answered a craigslist ad asking for a house cleaner. The email correspondence seemed sorta sketchy, as they asked for just minimal contact info however all seemed ok - no bank account numbers, none of that, just name and addy. And then today..I find a fedex express overnight delivery envelope with simply a check in it for roughly $4000 (rounding up). So..take a gander at these emails..what do you think? Is it legit? Am I in some sort of scam I'm unfamiliar with? Laundering stolen money perhaps?

Quote:

Hello,
How are you doing? The payment will be delivered to you asap via UPS courier service. The check payment that was made out to you is $3,653.72 instead of ($720) for your 2 weeks job in advance which includes mover's fund, This was as a result of the extra charges by UPS on every package that is been sent through overnight service.

What you just need to do for me is to take it to your bank, deposite it and withdraw the mover fund immediately, after deducting your own money and easily forward the extra money directly to the mover in cash via Money Gram Money Transfer immediately. I guess i can count on you that you will handle this with trust and understanding. I also believe you will carry out every instruction I'm giving you with less supervision. Please i am very sorry for this inconvinency i am giving you, you can as well deduct an extra $50 USD for the stress i must have put you and as well for your running around in cashing the check.

Note that this must be done in a timely manner because am already behind schedule, and the mover can complete his job asap and you will be able to start your own cleaning job. The keys to the apartment will be giving to you as soon as the mover completed its job. Kindly, send the money immeditely at any wallmart so that the money will be available instantly for the mover to cash at the Money Gram Store.

This is the mover info to send the money to, via Money Gram Money Transfer. Pls follow the instruction and keep me posted.

NAME:  other lady
CITY:Coram,
STATE:NY
ZIP CODE: numbazz

As soon as you send the money, i will want you to get back to me with Money Gram details on the receipt such as.

The sender's Name and Address
Receiver's Name
Money Gram: 8 digit reference number
The Actual Amount sent:

However, all the Money Gram charges must be deducted from the money you are to send to the mover and not from the money am given you. Lest I forget,I will get back to you with the home address where you will be working as soon as you finish this first step for me.

Looking forward to meeting you soon and i hope your service will be a pleasant one.

I will be waiting to hear from you.

Regards.

    Hi **BOB**

I read your e-mail and understand you'll be arriving the 25th and would like to get the keys sent out in advance to start early. That's good to know so I can ask a few questions and try to best prepare myself for the job. I was curious though, you mentioned you were staying in a 3 bedroom house but then I also read about an apartment? Will you be staying in an apartment temporarily and then switching to the house? From reading your email I'm assuming you'll be coming with your family, probably for a work related move? To be completely honest this offer sounds to good to be true but if you're serious I would certainly be willing to approach the work with a tenacious and sincere attitude. I enjoy working independently and thoroughly and find cleaning relaxing so this would doubtlessly be a fantastic opportunity! Also, here is the other pertinent information you requested.

Completely textbook scam.

In the end it just won't clear, and if you spent the money already, you'll owe the bank $4000.

Why would you deposit it, you can't spend ANY of the money, it's a fake bum cheque.

So after all the trouble, you got an illegal $4000 in your account that you can't spend, why would you want to do that.

Tear, burn or otherwise destroy that check. I've worked for a couple different banks over the past couple years and I can't tell you how many people have had their credit completely boned from trying to outwit the system with bad checks. It's not worth anything, and for your own good don't try to do anything with it.

THERE IS NO MONEY ATTACHED TO THAT CHECK. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE YOU CASH IT OR HOW YOU CASH IT.

ITS JUST A PIECE OF PAPER THAT LOOKS LIKE A CHECK.

I did it once, but I knew it was a scam and I was tired of my bank because they fucked me over too many times.

In the end I owed them money, but I didn't pay them.

Just don't do it. Just because I did it and didn't give a shit doesn't mean you should follow my footsteps. I just didn't care one way or another w/ my bank.

Turn the check over to your local bank, tell them you know the check is from a scam artist. If it's something happening based from an account in the US there is a chance they can get it to the right people (SEC/FBI) who have task forces together for investigating fraud.

Nope, just exemplifying the extent to which your check doesn't contain value, based off the debate we were having.

Since paper money gets its value from being widely accepted as having worth, and your paper isn't accepted by anybody (not even the shroomery), then your paper must be extra-extra-worthless.

the check will clear I sell items all the time and get this scam. I checked with the bank on how to bust these fuckers and you cant most of them are living in africa with works in the states to pick up your money. problem is every thing on there check is fake and the only person the bank will go after is you. so you can cash it and have four thousand dollars that you will have to pay back pluss interest if you cant. or you trust these scam artists and they walk off with your money because like I said the bank will go after you.

the check will clear I sell items all the time and get this scam.

Call the bank and tell them to red flag the account on the check.

what a pathetic scam. they had given me 2 names in the email, chewang, and jamie, as well as 2 sets of directions. combined with bad english? wow.

weren't you on the verge of falling for it? :smirk:

NEVER waste time with any craigslist transaction through mail. it is a scam 99.99999% of the time. i wouldn't even give those assholes my address through e-mail.. phone number only, and if they aren't willing to meet face to face, its a fucking waste of time.

i don't understand how people still get ripped off, is the general populous really this retarded?

i wasn't bashing you OP, just making a general statement about people who fall for those obvious scams.

you were smart to check it out.. its just your post sounded a bit hopeful/excited about this being real and there was never any possibility of it being real
