Pins at last!!
    #1106998 - 12/03/02 12:17 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

At last one of my jars is pinning. The problem is at the moment they are on top of the hot water heater but I need to move the pinning cake into my terrarium. The temp in the terrarium is about 60-65f, what effect will this have on my newley forming mushroom? The terrarium is an aquarium PF style so any idears on heating it would be appreciated.

you could try putting it in front of a heat vent or something to increase the temperature and maybe put a hummidifier in the vincinty the raise the hummidity.

you should keep the temp higher than that. At about 75 degrees will start more pins and provide enough heat for the growing mushrooms. It's really cold in my house too. About the same temps. I am home throughout the day proabably 1-3 times. I just boil a bot of water and either pour that in the perlite (not too much thouhgh) or just boil it really hot and put it in a mug. This helps raise the temp and provide humidityat least for a while. Hope this helps. If you're home more often than me than I'm sure this will work fine.

icubate your terrarium with a fish heater - ideally mid 70s are good...search for more on the topic... use a quart plastic bottle with a 25 watt heater for a 50 qt container

A drop in temperature is a good thing, you want to keep the temp in the low 70's, and humidity in the 90's.

Thanks thisone. Since I posted my question I had an idea. I put the cake on a wet paper towel in a large measuring jug and put the cake on it then covered it with cling film which I'd sprayed first and sat it back on the water heater. It's only good for one cake of cause so when the others start to pin I think I'll use your mug of water idea. Have you had much success with it?

i HEARD only lower temps cause the fruits to mature slower.

well i found this to be ok to heat a space is just get like a 20oz bottle or so and get it as hot as your hot water will go fill it and cap it and place it in the fruiting chamber. it will keep heat aruond 70s.
