The one week method.....
    #1105002 - 12/02/02 06:52 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

What are the opinions on leaving PF-Jars in the incubator a week after 100% colonization is reached. Is it neccesary?

Sometimes it isn't sometimes it's not. The purpose is so that the center is surely colonized.

I like to let them sit for a week, but that's just me, no its not completely necessary, but it doesn't hurt, so why not do it?

My incubator was in the dark and now that my jars look 100% on the outside I'm letting them get a few hours of indirect light in below incubator temps every day and when they pin that will be when I decide there 100%, works for me.

This won`t work fro everyone user-exsists, a large chunk of users don`t do pf cakes anymore and rather choose to do casings.
Once a jar begins pinning invitro it is a waste to case it, you will end up wither harvesting some pins or just leaving them in the casing which would eventually possibly cause contamination.

So if casings are being done then just leave them for a few days longer to fully colonise, if using cakes then fine, let them begin pinning invitro and birth them.

Postpones everything for a week!! and if it starts to pin invitro, its not good for casing.

I`ve never had a jar pin invitro before.
SO I wouldn`t go and start worrying about jars pinning invitro and not being able to case.
If you leave them in the incubator in the dark they will be fine.

But the longer you keep the mycelium in the jar, the more nutrients it consumes before it starts to produce mushrooms right?

You can still case if it's pinning invitro but you need to remove the pins off the substrate as these can contam easily.

I as well agree derrayld and did not have casings in mind I also agree you can case after pinning has started but if your casing then what's the point of letting pins form?
