How wet does 50/50 have to be?
    #1106728 - 12/03/02 12:13 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Ive harvested a few flushes now (3) and must say, that it hasn't all gone too smoothly. Anyway Ive done a few good experiences , and hope to improve in the process... Ive cased my first and only grow with 50/50mix. Unfortunately , I only got shrooms on the side(where the soil pulls away) from my first flush, and so decided to simply flip the casing onto its back, and use the straight verm as a layer.
Cause of that my second flush was loads better , as I also got shrooms on the top.
Ive dunked the mycelium and decided to recase 50/50 for the third and fourth flushes. But I encountered the same problem as before: Not shrooms on the top of the casing. I decided to deepscratch and then dampen it greatly.Afterwards I let it sit in 25 degrees celcius ,as to get the mycelium to grow. The next day I had a good pinset on the top!
My question hnow is: Do I really have to dampen the casing frequently , or not? Would it harm the pins , if I did?
Thanks,
Jazz

Well small amounts of water isnt gonna hurt, but remember if you have lots of pins then the mycelium has decided there is enough moisture to produce mushrooms, and over watering could increase your aborts or damage the mycelium or delay the fruiting cycle.

Stamets and many other forest animals recommend a 75% moisture content for casings.  Seems to work for him at least.

my dingo likes the snowball test, try making casing into a snowball when you squeeze, if it drip excessively it's too wet! my dingo also agrees over watered casing causes aborts.

If its producing pins it should already be moist.....during fruiting I only give it two or three sprays in the morning and night when i air it out.
