The percentage of involvement with the website and the psychedelic subculture was greater.
People shared personal stuff to a level back then that, if you'd do it now it would be held against you.
The small town has become a city, and thus more impersonal.
Its like tripping in a way.. if you trip with 2, 3, 4 people its really up close & personal. If you trip with 10 people, group processes take over.
The Shroomery isn't lost, but its looking for its new identity.
Back in 2003 or so, when newbies came in they were sort of initiated into forum culture. This worked because newbies trickled in. Now we have so many newbies coming in the newbies have their own subculture, and the group which was fairly tight knit has become amorphous.
The Shroomery vibe consisted of a few cultural aspects which were consistent. You welcomed new posters, you shared your knowledge. Newbies now gets all sorts of signals, including from the many other newbies that are around at any time.
We need to solidify our gains. I would be in favor of an annual hiatus in the influx of new members, lets say 3 months a year where you can't join the shroomery. This allows the existing membership to stabilize, and who comes back to the Shroomery after the hiatus to join it, will be those more motivated to join us than most.
Alternatively there could be a lag of lets say 50 days between joining and being able to post, and another 25 days still before you can start threads.
Solidifying our gains might do the trick.
I like it.

I don't know...
Those ideas are valid and completely understandable, but it kind of implies that new posters aren't worthy posters. Sure, it allows n00bs to acclimate to the Shroomery, and it sets parameters in which they must adhere to, but what the fuck is that? Since when did the counter-culture have rules?! Since when did the counter-culture have an heirarchy? Since when did the Shroomery care about who deserves to post and who doesn't?
Those ideas benefit the most seasoned posters who are generations ahead of the newer posters; they don't truly benefit the Shroomery as a whole! I think those ideas would slow down progress here. I like it when n00bs are flamed for posting something that obviously violates the rules. Why do i enjoy it? Because said n00bs learn from their posts. If you don't like a post, you don't have to read it, reply to it, or even think about it. The Shroomery does NOT have an heirarchy. The Shroomery is a playing field where all are invited. No one is picked last on the team. We learn from each other for the betterment of the community. Mod's will pick out those who don't belong based upon their actions, here, on the forums. We shouldn't assume that new posters aren't worthy of posting here! I believe that attitude fuels stupidity and ignorance. We keep others out, subsequently keeping information and knowledge out. That doesn't help our cause as members of a counter-culture. This isn't some hideout or secret lair for all the c0ol dRuG uZ3rZ; it's a fucking public forum!

I can see having a 30 day 50 post limit on making a thread. Kinda like the Vets lounge, you can reply first then later you can make threads.
I think that noobs should be able to talk with us as soon as they sign up but wait a while and get used to the place before allowing them the ability to start threads
I think that would cut down on a lot of the stupid, pointless threads
