I was at the Washington D.C. Tea Party Protest
    #11064748 - 09/15/09 05:46 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Not to protest of course, but to observe.

I went on .4 grams of pure MDMA and a voice recorder going the entire time, it was a great time.

I am writing a full review now, but it will be long, a few pages long in fact and likely won't be finished for a few days still.

But I wanted to give a few observations for you guys to chew on until then.

(1) No black people, or at least very few. The entire time I was there I saw a total of two black people who were for the protest.

(2) Almost no counter protesters. I saw one on the way in and one on the way out. The one of the way out was standing on a pile of protesting signs with his own sign saying "I support the POTUS" and told me "It takes Acorns to be out here with this sign"

(3) I heard a lot of talk about assassination. Not anyone threatening to do it themselves but every now and then I would hear someone say its going to happen. "Its going to be President Joe Biden, you heard it hear first!" Can be heard on my voice recorder.

(4) There were other, less publicized protests going on at the same time. In the shadow of the washington momument (on the back side) there was a pro immigration rally giving out food and playing music. They had signs like "Being Brown is not a crime" and "Legalize don't Criminalize" It numbered around 100. There was also, (this was less of a protest more of a concert) a "Black Family Reunion Event" going on with a few thousand African Americans there.

(5) The numbers of 1.2 mil to 1.5 mil seemed right, it was impossible to count but I don't think I ever saw the same person twice.

(6) The strangest thing was how quickly everything cleared out. There were (maybe) over million people there and then once it was "over" the protesters cleared out. Some went to the white house (around 200) for an hour or two longer while the rest just went back to their hotels or houses. It was a stark contrast to the 1968 Chicago DNC protests. These people said they were mad, fed up, and weren't going to take it anymore but when they were told to go home, they mostly just went home. Within the hour D.C. was back to its normal, decrepit self.

A million people protesting in one city is something hard to ignore, yet Bush ignored War protests with absolute abandon. It will be interesting to see if Obama (and Congress) can do the same.

There are widely conflicting reports of it. Some put it as low as "tens of thousands" a number I can tell you from being there is patently false.

Its hard to judge crowds without a high view, but the crowd stretched on for as long as I could see, and by the time I got there, people were already leaving. 75 thousand still seems low, but in the 100,000s could be more on spot. Still I would not disbelieve the one million + mark that some have put it at. The organizers claimed 1.5 mil at the event and have since moved that up to 2 mil. But they are not a trust worthy source.

Its a shame the news outlets can't let us get a real number, but whatever it was it was big, no doubt about that.

There's a pretty good panoramic photo here

Judging from that I would say it appears to surpass the "tens of thousands" descriptor.  It looks like every available space is filled so there was no doubt even more people beyond the camera range.

It was almost certainly in the low to mid hundreds of thousands. Perhaps as much as a million - it is hard to say for sure. But several overhead photos (as well as a time lapse Youtube video from a stationary webcam of the marchers filing past) show  there is no possible way the number was less than say a quarter million, and may have easily been double that.

The greatest amount of collateral damage from the Obama Presidency is going to fall on the heads of the MSM.  They just keep chopping their own dicks off.  Every day more and more people don't believe a single fucking word they say.

Perhaps you are right about that.

I think is disgraceful the MSM's reporting on the numbers. Rather then tell the truth (the press' only job) they decide to play partisan politics. When I read on my phone that there were only 10,000 people there, and I climbed on a statue and looked around and clearly saw more then 10,000 people just on and around the lawn I knew that getting hard numbers would be difficult. The police wouldn't give me any estimates so the only thing we have to go on are educated guesses and the widely conflicting numbers. I mostly disagree with the protest, but protests of both sides should be counted, and covered accurately, otherwise how else will we know the pulse of the nation?

I suppose we will never know, but what I can tell you is that it was not "tens of thousands" it was just too large, I've been to NFL games and the amount of people here far surpassed that.

100,000 at least, likely more.

I suspect the loony right is the only ones still taking them as a credible source.

However I've seen a lot of large protests and I can say that the photo you have linked to contains into the tens of thousands at best. However there may be more in the time-lapse thingamajig. I can't be bothered to care to look at it though.

The true measure of a protest is it's riot porn, of which I see none, so therefore this one is an epic fail.

Ummmm no.  That would be the exact opposite.

Nah, most liberals I talk to say they don't trust Fox, CNN, MSNBC or any of them.

They might trust sources like the NYT but thats about it. And Newspapers on both sides are a lot more journalistic then T.V. sources (although, still not great).

But I know a great deal many of conservatives who trust fox news, in fact I saw two signs at the protest, one saying "Thank you Fox News" and one saying "CNN = Bias, MSNBC = Bias, ABC = Bias, Fox News = Balanced"

But I don't think they represent the group as a whole, if it did then that would be more damning then the Obama/Hitler signs (and I don't think thats a big deal)

That's because the '68 DNC protests were...  more liberals.  Liberals have crreeee-raaaaazzy protests, I'm not sure if there's a line for them between "protest" and "riot" or if one simply naturally flows into the other.

hey funny fact, did you know that Jeremiah Wright was a speaker there?  I sure didn't.  But then, that's not shocking, they even let Jesse Jackson speak.  well..  what he calls speaking.

and Sombie..  the NYT?  REALLY?  Strip that paper of its prestigious past and name, and all you have left is the same sort of paper I flush down the toilet.  Cheap and full of shit.  I had to stop buying it after seeing one too many opinion piece passed off as actual journalism, "facts" being thrown around with nothing to back them up aside from the writer believing them to be true (and the quotation marks mean that they were in fact, not true), and just an all-around lack of integrity.  And also completely overblowing anything that takes place in or involves NYC -- which is understandable, but obnoxious, because I get enough of that kind of shit just dealing with people who live in NYC already.

I don't read many papers, and if I do its usually only for the sports (and its the Post, not the NYT) anyway. But I was just saying what liberals read if they read any MSM. I guess the Nation is one that they read to.

I personally like "The Weekly" because it just gives excerpts of liberal and conservative opinions, but even that I only read in the John.

Really I only like the AP, just give me the facts ma'am and I'll make up my own mind, its a shame to, because old journalists would be able to give a colorful picture of what was going on, now unless you want partisan opinion the best you can get is a fuzzy, dark, black and white picture.
