Need ID, Leucoagaricus americanus?
    #11059781 - 09/14/09 09:12 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat:
I found these growing in pine needles under some shrubs in a park.

Gills: Pale cream/pink.  Bruise orange when touched.

Stem: 3-4" long, 1/4" wide, widening slightly at the base.  Ring attached.

Cap: The caps seem to get about 2.5" across, somewhat conical, dry to the touch with scaly pattern.

Spore print color: Pale, white as far as I can tell.

Bruising: Mushroom bruises a reddish orange.  I put some in the fridge.  The orange turned black.  I hope they're not dead, because I got some good stem butts that I want to transplant to my yard if this is L. americanus.

Other information:
Smells and tastes like mushroom.

Here are pictures.  I should have turned off my flash.

Here you can see where I rubbed the stem base.

I would say it looks correct to me. Leucoagaricus americanus.

Nice pics!

Awesome.  Any lookalikes I should be concerned about?  They're definitely not Chlorophyllum molybdites.

I think I'm going to pass on experimenting with them for the moment.  Experimenting hasn't worked out too well for me in the past, and the same boletes I poisoned myself with are coming up everywhere to remind me!

Turning black in the fridge doesn't sound like americana. Americana would turn red in the fridge.

Sorry for the tangent but I'm trying to follow along and learn how to use keys but this species you are talking about does not seem to be represented in my guides (Audubon, Lincoff & Falcon, Miller.)(...ok it does look like it has an entry in audubon under Lepiota) When I take these back to the library is there something I should buy? Something up to date and comprehensive? Or do I just kind of have to get used to inconsistencies in taxonomy and have several books? I wish there was one...? Mushrooms Demystified looks good but it is a bit older and (I hear) Western focused. I'm in the Souteast. Again, sorry, and thanks!

Leucoagaricus americanus will appear as Lepiota americana in most field guides.  The name has changed recently.  Ah, another casualty of.. Taxonomy Wars!
