Hah! So,

I got a few original printings of Charles' Dicken's Nicholas Nickelby pretty much in the condition you see here for $2 at a semi-local flea market.

Also, for $2, I managed to get a copy of Robert Browning's The Poetical Works of Robert Browning, Vol XVI completely authentic, near great shape, uncut (quarto), and authentic signature. He died 12/12/1889. Means he signed this book 4-6 months before his death.



Begs the questions...

Do I sell now? :strokebeard2:

Do I sell later? It's already been 170 years for Dickens and 120 years for Browning.

I can't EBay these things because I'd never find the right buyer (aka find the person willing to shell out the right price I want).

Someone's got a clipping of Browning's signature from an old letter for 2 grand up on eBay, I can't begin to venture a guess what the signed book is worth..


Any input/advice/help etc is greatly appreciated  :awesome:

My guess, and it's just a guess, is that the first thing you'd want to do is get them appraised by an expert.

:eek: Don't sell them now! Store them for a few years until you do find the right market. I'd be tempted to just keep them, if you need the cash later they will be there.

I was thinking antiques roadshow but that's a major ripoff...

I seriously need the money, and if it can fetch 10k, I'd gladly take it -- but I'd want to keep it "off the books" :lol:

I'd assume I really have to go through proper channels, though. Where do you even find a book expert that's going to appraise them at 5k, pay 7k, and resell at 15-20k or something?

I've never found gems like this in my searches for rare books and didn't believe it at first -- either one of them. For Browning's sig to be signed the year of his death... that's just amazing.

I'm wary of getting ripped but I guess that's a first step...

I'm still astounded. Usually I've gotten older books just for the sake of being first editions or >100 years old and in good shape.

Now, to find a book expert in my area

I used to buy and sell old occult(Freemason, Rosicrucian, etc) books I found at local markets.

These were books that I bought for a couple bucks and usually sold for 20-100 though; not nearly as much as what you might get. I just listed them on ebay.

Open your yellopwages.  Look up book stores and antique stores and start calling.  Ask where you can get appraisals and get three of them.

Also ask about publications to sell them in or if people might know of collectors who are willing to buy them.

That's where I would start.  In just an hour on the phone you will probably have all your answers.

So far from what I've found is that the 1839 editions rarely exist in any type of good shape anymore. :loveeyes:

There was a folded newspaper clipping in the Dickens book about his plans to go to America to write some masterpieces... which I'm assuming are "The Christmas Books". I was so excited so I only lightly skimmed it, and didn't want to rip the clipping by removing it. Unfortunately it stained the pages it was in.

Also picked up "Sketches by Boz", otherwise known as "Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-Day People". It appears to be the "Second Series" from August 1836, which is a single volume, not the two-volume set from Feb 1836. I think.

I should've brought them home, but I'm actually really glad they're locked up at my parent's house.

OMG I've bought so many awesome books at those things for next to nothing. If anyone is in Florida they have to check our local one out, it's fucking huge. They do it twice a year, and they have hundreds of thousands of books.

There's a guy who comes every two weeks to this flea market. He used to own a used bookstore and we got to talking. He's going to be there this week, and I had asked him what he had from the Romantic period. Hopefully, he'll have some good shit, especially the Wordsworth stuff I requested.

Going to be hard "pressed" to find any really "high-shelf" items at a low price. I'm certain finding a Wordsworth signature is damn near impossible since he was really only truly revered posthumously.

I hope the old lady that sold me these books shows up again this week... "Young man, I have a ton of these worthless things in my cellar. If you promise you'll be here next week I'll sell them by the box."

Is there sites to look up the value of books? Virus's fucked my google ability.

I've got lots of old books,but i just have them because I really like the tactile sensations of old books.

I have a what i've been told to be a first issue sartor resartus that's i have all of 3 bucks in,hah. Always wondered if it was worth anything.

good find, that is rare
actually having someone pay a large amount of $ for it is another thing though
those huge prices from http://www.abebooks.com for first editions are inflated and they rarely sell
