i just stuck a heating pad in small box with a hand towel between the jars so it doesnt heat up too much. just get a heating pad to fit whatever box or container your going to have it in.

They're all unsuitable for incubation, but if you insist on getting one then make sure it has an adjustable heat control.

heating pad work but you'll have to mess with it forever to get right temperature by tring to put something between the pad/box. U mentioned you didn't want to use fishtank hitter but hey it's alot easier. just set a temp around 83 and leave it. Very easy.

Would leaving the fishtank heater out in the open of the terraium be sufficient or does it have to be submerged in some way underwater?

It isn't a fishtank heater for nothing. I think if it is left out in the open it will burn out or burn something. Why bother anyways, just stick it in a glass of water and you'll be fine.

dont use a blanket.. very big fire hazard. just put a fish tank heater in a big glass jar with a small lid that will fit nice with the heater.. u dont need to fill up the water often and its safe with a little H2O2 or rubbing alcohol.

heating pads work fine, however water is still needed. First read this and instead of using a fish tank heater just put a heating pad under your bins, on low power it usually keeps the top bin at 86 degrees.
Using a heating pad any other way could very well lead to problems though.
