Phaeolus schweinitzii, the Dye Polypore, I think.
Just found one of those for the first time a few weeks ago here in Washington.

Goodnight.
Sleep Tight.
Don't let the bedbugs bite...
Hopefully we will wake up with a confirmation from a TI.

that looks reasonable, but i'm not familiar with that mushroom. was it growing directly from a root?

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Yes you are, you have found it hundreds of times I am sure. Its kind of dark colored so not too memorable though. Even good ones look rotten unless you look closely.
I am not sure if OP has that mushroom, a better macro shot of the underside would clear that up.
Looks more like Inonotus to me.

i've seen them a lot. i've never bothered to pay attention to them, not identify them confidently, as simple a matter as that might be.
does that phrase it better?

DISCLAIMER: Do not eat a mushroom that hasn't been positively identified. Make sure you read these two stickies:

Think about your favorite food. Imagine now if you could find pounds and pounds of it, for free, while taking a wonderful hike in a serene forest. It's a nature walk with a free lunch, and fresh mushrooms are delicious.

Often there are more bugs in the food that you buy off the shelves than are contained in freshly picked mushrooms. Sorry to be the one to inform you of this, but all the food that you eat has some contamination (e.g., insect eggs and parts). These limits are called "Grade Standards" and in the United States are set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture: http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/course/ent425/text18/food.html
Food picks up a lot of insects when stored. Most supermarkets are concerned about the bottom line, and won't throw food out until it's completely gone. Ever see a fruit fly buzzing around the supermarket? Ever see a worker picking rotten fruit off the shelves? The whole batch has been sitting around for a while, and is full of insect eggs--hatching! And it's a very short trip to the next onion!
I only take the firm, fresh ones that are relatively bug-free. I cook them thoroughly to kill any insects. These mushrooms are completely organic--no pesticides or chemicals used to grow them. You simply can't buy mushrooms this fresh.
My recommendation: try it and see how you do. Take a little hike through the woods and bring a camera. Take some pictures, take some mushrooms home, and post them up.

there's nothing wrong with the desire, as long as it's tempered by a desire to know and understand the mushrooms safely. most of us here love mushrooms, many of us eat them. it's normal.
it's really no different from foraging plants [which i also do]. it's food, it's tasty and to top it off, it's a great depth of interesting study to keep one busy.
