Breaking up birdseed for spawning??
    #1105152 - 12/02/02 09:49 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Is there an easier method than using your hands for breaking up birdseed when ur about to spawn a bulk substrate?? I know the more innoculation points u have, the better colonization will go, so I was wondering if u could throw the birdseed in a blender or food processor or something?? Thanks!!!!

If you spoon it out (with a clean spoon) it will break into smaller chunks which can be broken up quite easily with your hands (gloved hands, that is).

To the poster above that said cheese grater, have you ever used a cheese grater on birdseed? I really don't see how a cheese grater would be of any use when dealing with grain. The substrate breaks apart very easily with a spoon and your hands.

I haven't found it hard at all.  Usually I break it up while its still in the jar with a spoon, then break up those chunks by hand, I haven't experienced the difficult side, but if you use a cheese grater with success, then more power to you.

Skikid is the only one who is talking from experience.
If any of you had done birdseed before you`d now how easy it breaks up with a simple spoon and your hands.
Barehands in my opinion are just fine as long as you wash your hands with antibacterial soap.
But like skikid says, using a cheese grater is really not going to work.
Birdseed or millet more importantly doesn`t form a solid cake, not like brf/verm.
So once you have pices it crumbles easily.
A blender would work but isn`t necessary, the grain is small enough you don`t still need to blender it.

When my jars are fully colonised I asceptically open them up and scrape the birdseed out using a fork. Each stroke of the fork usually releases many small chunks of birdseed.
