Air purifier debate

My friend and I have been debating this problem he is having. He ran his HEPA while he was chopping straw to cut down on the dust (which there was plenty of).Ever since, he has had a problem with contams during his g2g transfers after running his purifier. He has changed nothing in his technique which use to work very well for him.
I am convinced, or maybe just paranoid that he has screwed his filter, or possibly the machine itself by gumming it up with straw dust.I am thinking that it is just spitting out more particles than it is filtering. I told him to at least change the filters. Or, get a new machine itself. But, he is cheap and doesn't want to spend the $60 for a new filter let alone $150 for a new purifier. Will anyone back me up on this or am I just crazy? Do you think a new machine is necessary, or just over cautious?

I dont know.. arent you supposed to change the filter annually anyhow???:shrug:

It's a permanent filter. So, you are actually only suppose to vacuum the filter. But, the thing is brown from the dust.

well vacuum that bitch than and tell your buddy not to prepare unsterilized/unpasteurized substrate in his grow room!

He did vacuum it and it still has a brownish tint.

my filter gets a brownish tint but mines removable.

also if he is vacumming it in the grow area he is probably putting half of the contam spores back in the air.

Yeah, I would have done the chopping outside. I do mine with a lawnmower and it is one hell of a dust cloud. Looks like a 420 smokeout with all my homies there.:grin:

Turn it off atleast an hour before you go to do sterile work. They will clean the air somewhat but wont remove everything. While its running it will be creating drafts and will blow contams around.

If your using it as a flowhood, thats a big no no. Those air purifiers dont create laminar flow.

Use a glovebox in a draught free area.

lol vacum and use an aircompressor which will just put most of those contaminant particles back into the air.

Well, I'm just going to tell him that you guys told him to buy a new one. You can't be too careful when it comes to g2g transfers IMO. And no I don't think he uses it as a flowhood. Just runs it for an hour before doing his transfers. He would prefer to do it outside but doesn't know what to tell his nosy neighbors when they ask him why he is chopping straw in a garbage can with a weed whacker. Looks a little strange doesn't it?

it might look a little strange but straw it notorious for harboring molds
it'll be the single greatest source for contaminants, if his neighbor asks
he should just tell the guy it's the only way to rid the world of all the kittens
