how's it going? -This would be first post, since I'm a lazy ass and was to `busy` to register. However I was checking shroomery posts for a year now. You guys doing a great job w/ spreading info. Just a question, does anybody use worm castings anymore? There seemed to be alot of interest in worm shit, but it kind of died out. I think shroomites get disgouraged when peronalities like Joshua saying that they had not so great experience w/ it. The first time I made worm casting/coco coir/straw + little bit of coir on top after casing colonized (ration about 4:1:4), I had awesome results. I had 2 casing of (PESAs, TC), and even though both contaminated after 2nd flush, I still had 5.3 oz completely dry from 2 flushes. I see some shroomites nowadays colonize straight cow/horse shiznit without giving much physical structure for mycelium to spread. I do believe that adding straw/coir adds the "structure" for mycelium that makes the difference. I personally tried worm shit only once, it seemes to work wonders; not considering the fact that it's the most expensive shit in the shit market. Anybody else had similar result of using coir/straw/worm shit? or noticed the difference from using 100% shit? and <100% Any bitching appreciated.
p.s. i think my contamination was due to the fact that my shit was dripping water during colonization and not so clean working conditions. - My shit was pasteurized. Shit was spawned with bird seed. From my short experince with mushies, I think potency was somewhat expected with the mush physical body weight. I have some pictures of it somewhere if I can find i'll post it sometime.

can't get straw where i am...so how would one use worm castings with coir? what kind of ratio? the castings i saw looked extremely dense, the bag was small but very heavy. it also looks like they'd readily dissolve in water, so would you make casting water and then mix with coir?

Well if you can't use straw i would imagine you could substitue it with more coir in your mix. 50/50 - worm/co, less or more (although i dono how it'll work). I think when you deal with castings you need something to make worm shit less dense, that is, more poriferous -- sort of. That's where coir comes in. And yeah if you were to cook it in a pillow case this shit probably flows right through...so...the way I did it was using large washtub. I put worm shit in aluminum container for bread, turkey etc., 170 ` for 2 hours and let it float in worm wash tub My coir with straw was done in pillow case then all was mixed together. In your case only coir? p.s If you don't have washtub, u could use a large pot with boiling water with your aluminum container on top( you'll have to mess with heat source a bit to get it right ) -dono try that let us know how that goes.
