We are God. The world is illusory
    #11044144 -

So the great mystic traditions say.  But how can this be?  If we are one with God, yet have the illusion that we are separate, is not illusion more powerful than God?  What is so potent about Maya that it manages to overpower awareness of our own divinity?

Infinity creates a finite parameter to shield itself from itself.

I don't think it says anything of the power of maya...after all not *everyone* is clueless about their divinity....

The perception of time is an interesting starting point for division.
In the grand scheme, the now is all there is, and it contains everything that has been and will be. We lose it in the now, and call it the past, or to become the future, because we perceive the passage of time. But really, it all unfolds in the now, so everything that can ever be, is in the now.

And what helps us observe time? Movement, decay, growth...
The idea that when something dies, it disappears for good?

It actually reminds me a lot of a young child's perception in a way. That when something disappears from view, it must be gone. That when a Mother leaves the room, she has been wiped from existence.
It seems that this reinforces the idea that we cannot be existence. That we somehow cease to exist upon death, so therefore, we must be separate from that which exists. And once we feel separate from that which exists, we feel obligated to examine that which does exist. We feel we don't know it as part of our same existence, but rather as if it is something separate and external.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

How is it that a tiny magnet overpowers the gravity of the entire Earth?

because you observe the magnet and the effects of gravitation?

Gravity and magnetism are not the same thing. In fact, they are totally and completely separate forces.

Because gravity is a weak force compared to electromagnetism.

Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in the blue and red but poorly in the green portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, hence the green colour of chlorophyll-containing tissues such as plant leaves.

In other words, grass isn't green. Green is the color it scatters. Maybe that's the answer for the koan "Who is the Master who makes the grass green?" ( and not "You" like R.A.W said ) besides a brief Mu. The same goes for the sky, your personality, and everything you know. You can see it in this koan, too:

The student Doko came to a Zen master, and said: "I am seeking the truth. In what state of mind should I train myself, as to find it?"
Said the master, "There is no mind, so you cannot put it in any state. There is no truth, so you cannot train yourself for it."
"If there is no mind to train, and no truth to find, why do you have these monks gather before you every day to study Zen and train themselves for this study?"
"But I haven't an inch of room here" said the master, "so how could the monks gather? I have no tongue, so how could I call them together to teach them?"
"Oh, how can you lie like this?" asked Doko.
"But if I have no tongue to talk to others, how can I lie to you?" asked the master.
Then Doko said sadly, "I cannot follow you. I cannot understand you."
"I cannot understand myself" said the master.

Re: We are God. The world is illusory [Re: iamrcr]

I used to think along these lines, it sometimes brought happiness, self-fulfillment, and joy.  But eventually it led to some pretty far-out conclusions that I no longer find applicable.

Our perception is the sum of the "real world" and our interpretation/selected reality of this world.  The "real world" is, from all my experiences and understanding, not an illusion.  However, we all perceive different realities which are partially illusions.  It is possible to expand consciousness, but there is no cap.

I don't know how I feel about the word god, but the human brain might be the closest thing to god I can think of.  God can be located in the minds of many humans, but we haven't found solid evidence of god outside of this.  The human mind can perform miracles, tragedies, enigmatic mindfucks, and a limitless amount of creativity.  So now instead of thinking "the human brain is god" I think "the human brain is the closest thing to god I know of", which makes much more sense.

What about this: "Man is God's brother".

Ideally, we ought to be aware of both temporality and eternality. If we Realize (make Real) only our eternality as a spiritual verity, we are, so-to-speak, God before creation came into existence. It has been debated whether creation is a matter of 'necessity,' because God's nature is creative, or whether it is a matter of 'choice,' because 'God is love,' and THAT nature wants other beings to experience love. So, God's creation-preservation-destruction of creation (to use Hindu terms), still means that there is an intrinsically meaningful interaction with creation on the part of the Creator. So why not us? As our breath fades away in high samadhi, or in physical death, along with all the mental attributes, only eternity remains. But we need to be aware of the eternity of Being throughout life anyway, so that as existence dissolves, we remain aware of ourselves as Essence. Seems simple - not easy, but simple.

Humans, according to Plato, were created by the children of the Demiurge, and this explains our dual nature. Because we are not directly descended from the Demiurge, we are not gods ourselves, but there is nonetheless something "divine" and "immortal" in us our rational souls, which are god-like. So humans lie between two realms: the ever-changing material realm grasped via sensation, and the eternal, unchanging realm of the Forms, grasped via reason. Because we have one foot in the material realm, says Plato, we have desires for material pleasures: we are subject to appetites for food, money, power, and sex -- and we are subject to anger, to envy, and to other emotions that cloud our rational judgement.

Perhaps god implemented the illusion of separateness on purpose. The one source fractured itself into a infinite number of finite reflections so that they could find there way back to their origin. Its not that illusion overpowers god, for god created illusion to allow for a struggle of self remembrance. Our disconnection isn't a flaw, outside of god's power; it is something god created to allow for a journey of re-integration.

Perhaps we implemented the illusion of separateness on purpose.

Has anyone ever noticed that during the short periods of time where you overcome the illusion things tend to flow more smoothly?

We were meant to hit a catalyst I think. An awakening.
Some people may do this when walking through the desert for 4 days with no water. Some may do it after a long period of meditation.
Some may do it on accident when they just wanted to get high.

Did not read through the other posts.  But here's my take on it.

Yes, we are God.  Experiencing itself subjectively.  Why would illusion be more powerful than God, if illusion is yet another of our creation?

If God is the only one, the only one participant in this never ending cycle of theatrical productions,  there therefore cannot and will not ever be another.  No other participants for there is only one. That is what the illusion of separateness is for.  To experience more than one.  To experience more than thyself.  To experience what it is like to be with others instead of infinitely alone.  To experience and become more than what he already is.  In the end, it is an illusion, yes.  But the fact that it's an illusion is of little important when you realize the importance of the experience.

I think the reason we come to this planet is to forget who/what we really are because how else would we find a way to have a fulfilling time?  That is, if we already come from a place of infinite possibility and choice, and all-knowingness - I can't think  of a reason why not to choose this experience.  It's pure awesomeness.  And if I already know the game before I got into it, then it may not be the roller-coaster that it is.

Maya is imagination, its a play, we could bitch about it, call it unfair, but when you have a bad dream creating a false reality in your dream world, do you then wake up & say it was unfair?

Without falling into illusion we couldnt experience waking up from it

Separation is an illusion, illusion means it is not real, can the unreal be considered more powerful than the Real?

Can Awareness actually be overpowered?
This mind & body can be overpowered for sure, but is Awareness these things?

First establish your identity, Awareness, or an illusory separate appearance in Awareness....

:peace:
