Plantation brand verm, I think? It's near the orchid soil. Seasonal, they could be out by now. They have Miracle Gro perlite in the 8 quart bags. It's where you'd expect it to be.
But always go look for yourself, don't bother calling. They don't care to try because 99% of calls are just time wasters anyway.

They have them both at mine, but only seasonally. I don't think the manager has any idea when their "season" comes around becuase they just stock them randomly.

I called my local Home Depot and Menards and Ace Hardware and they didn't carry any verm. I drove out to Lowes and found a bag easily. I forgot what brand it was. Sorry.

Screw Lowes. They usually only sell tiny bags that are way overpriced.
Go to Menards. Go to the insulation section and find a big ass bag of 'Loose Fill Attic Insulation' for $9.50 or so. These are 3 cubic ft bags of PURE VERM.

You never heard that commercial "Save Big Money At Menards"
It's a kick ass store. They sell all the shit that Lowes and Home Depot has ... just cheaper.

NineInchNails, isn't Menard the lead singer of tool, NIN talkin about Tool, hmm, well I thought it was it was a nice coincidence, anyway, I picked up perlite at fred meyer in the garden section $4, and "horticultural" verm at Lowes for $6 (though the perlite was cheaper at lowes. Both in with the soil additives/fillers, and fertilizer stuff, though it was my first time buying it, I did look in the insulation isle and didn't see that other stuff. This has been working fine for me though.

Haha I grew up with those commercials, and they're still just as shitty as they were in the early 90's. I guess Menard's must just be a midwest thing?? Good find though NIN, gonna have to check that out my bag is running low.
Lowes is usually where I buy my verm and perlite.

They don't have verm in the garden section, and the one around here never seems to have it in the insulation section- but now that I've seen that picture, I'm going to go look again.

I've been told to check the concrete section of big hardware stores. Verm is mixed with concrete for MANY types of applications. Who knows what 'they' call it, but that's a common use for verm.
Large concrete suppliers should BE either a source for verm or know where to get it. Many liner type swimming pools have a thick base of verm beneath the liners so there's another common use for it.
Sometimes ya gotta think outside the box to buy in bulk. Verm is everywhere, ya just gotta know where to look for it.

I'm in the same boat. I couldn't find it anywhere. I finally just bit the bullet and ordered on line paying $30 shipping for a $24 bag of verm. I shouldn't be running out any time soon though; the bag is huge!

that's the thing i only need a small bag coz i'm only planning on doing 3 to 4 cakes at a time...
i did noticed that walmart did have the perlite, so i'm pretty sure that lowe's has it also. now my only problem is the vermiculite. i'll probably have to keep looking around, does anyone know when vermiculite is "out of season"??

I think I've read that it's seasonal. With fall quickly approaching it may be harder to find. Maybe you can order a smaller bag from one of the online suppliers.

Yes, I have the bag near me.
Sta-Green Horticultural Vermiculite.
I use fine verm as a roll layer for cakes, and am currently trying it out with casings and colonizing jars. All seems to be going well so far, but it does present some problems with jars, namely compaction if you happen to move the jars too much.

sooOo...should i not use it for my jars? coz this will be my first grow and i don't want to use something that make it harder for me to colonize.

Just get regular medium grade verm online if you can't find it anywhere.
