GLOVE BOX WITH NO GLOVES

Okay I realize they call it a glove box because you use gloves inside the box. Well, I recently saw this video and there is definately no gloves attached to the box. So my question is. Is it even necessary? What are your opinions on this. Im about to build my own and this just seems way easier? Thanks

It's a still air box, same thing. Best to use gloves though, fingernails are quite dirty.

Okay but what if you wear gloves on your hands while working inside the box. Is it just as good then?

Well, yes and no. Yes because the box is only there to keep the air still while you work. No because you let a little air in every time you move.
A still air box is great for mycology though, it will keep the air pretty darn still and let you work without too much trouble to build.

Not to be too repetitive but ....The 'glove box’ itself is actually more for protecting against airborne contaminates and contaminates affecting your procedures that are brought in by drafts in the room. The ‘gloves’ themselves are for protecting your work from contaminates on your skin and clothes.
I use a glove box with no gloves attached to the box itself. It has just two holes for my arms up to about mid forearm. I also put on tyvek sleeves (purchased at EBay for about $1.00 a pair), treated with alcohol and nitrile gloves (Home Depot) treated with alcohol as well to protect against contaminates from my skin and clothes.
I prepare the box prior to each use by wiping the interior down with alcohol then spraying with Oust, closing it and covering the holes and letting it sit for 20-30 minutes.
I’ve always had great luck with it.
I hope that helps a bit.

there called still air boxes if i recall right but a glove box is a safer bet. taping gloves on the holes isn't that much more work for the extra safety it will provide against contams.

The still air box that I use is pretty easy to put together if you want to start out slow and work your way up to expensive and complex.
It's one piece, no holes, easy to clean and my contamination rate is so low you wouldn't believe me.
Because it's a still air box, I turn off the air while I'm using it. I also alcohol wipe everything down, including the inside of the box, and the table. I shower and use sanitizer on my hands. I don't even use Lysol anymore.
I would use a laminar flow for petri work, but for jars, my set-up kicks ass.
P.S. This is NOT a joke.

And there you have it.

Newbie, mine looks just like that, except holes in the side, Lid on, and tyvek with + shapes cut in them over the holes. This prevents normal air movement from the room from entering my box and gives it a more professional look IMO. Still air is really good at keeping contams out!
