Enlightenment as Selflessness

Unless you were born an enlightened being, pursuance of enlightenment is fueled by narcissistic self-interest. Since there appears to be no such thing as bona-fide altruism, enlightenment is paradoxical in its nature.

As well as being a fictional, unattainable state.

self-interest isn't the same as narcissism. and enlightenment doesn't mean the same thing to everybody.

self-interest isn't the same as narcissism.
From Narcissism - Wikipedia
Quote:
The term narcissism refers to the personality trait of self-love, which includes the set of character traits concerned with self-image or ego. The terms narcissism, narcissistic, and narcissist are often used as pejoratives, denoting vanity, conceit, egotism or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others.
Freud believed that some narcissism is an essential part of all of us from birth. Andrew Morrison claims that, in adults, a reasonable amount of healthy narcissism allows the individual's perception of his needs to be balanced in relation to others.
While most people possess some degree of narcissistic traits, higher levels of narcissism can be dysfunctional, and may be classified as pathologies such as narcissistic personality disorder and malignant narcissism. Psychopathy, as defined by the PCL-R, also contains a narcissistic factor.

Any given term means the same for everyone; do we need to define our terms?

It is not enlightenment which is paradoxical, it is the pursuit of enlightenment that could be considered paradoxical... but since a person who pursues enlightenment is not in a state of realization of it, it's not paradoxical, just narcissistic.

in mahayana buddhism, the bodhisattva ideal is key. this means one would willingly be the last being to go off to paranirvana while assisting countless beings... very far from selfish
no matter how one begins on the path (including being selfish), attainment necessitates selflessness as it involves transcending ego desires.
and enlightenment is real
