It's a Macrolepiota. Possibly a good edible. If you cut it off, does the intersection stain yellowish-orange turning reddish after a few minutes or does it stain light greyish?

I didn't notice the "yellowish-orange" stage, but it did turn a reddish brown after a few seconds.  See the pics.  No Greyish...

When you say "edible"... do you mean salad or psych??  LOL

Could this be a Shaggy parasol?

You found Macroplepiota rhacodes. Well cooked it is an excellent edible, but don't use it in a salad, because it's poisonous and can cause severe gastro-intestinal irritations when eaten raw.
If it was psycoactive then I would have called it an "active" mushroom, not an edible.

I just checked. They are now called Chlorophyllum rhacodes and yes, "shaggy parasol" is the common name for it, but I don't normally use common names, because they are bound to confuse people. For example, the name "shaggy parasol" is also used for the closely related Chlorophyllum brunneum and I simply refuse to call two different species by the same name, no matter how closely they are related.

Thanks for the identification!  I googled pics of "Macrolepiota rhacodes" and that's it.  I have about 5 more growing in my backyard, but they are pretty small.  How long should I wait before I pick them?  The sun is coming up now.  Will they wither?

Also, do you have a recommendation for preperation?  Sauted?

Apparently, they are considered best in the button stage (i.e., now), but I've seen cactu prepare most of his when fully matured (open caps). The further you let them mature, the bigger the meal, obviously. It's up to you.

They are excellent when you prepare them before they open. You can also wait until the caps are fully open and then slice them into little mushroom cap steaks, batter them in bread crumbs and fry them in a pan. That's my favorite way of preparing them. In any case, if you let them mature, toss the stipes, they aren't anything to write home about.

I've found M.clelandii here in Australia. Cactu said they should be edible when I asked him in another thread, I didn't try these ones but would like to give them a try next time I come across them.

The edible Macrolepiotas are one of my favorite edibles. They have such an awesome taste.

Should I just prepare the caps or can I include the stem as well?  I was thinking about just slicing them and sauteing in butter.  Any other tips on preparing them?

You can eat them that way if you pick them with the caps closed and it's an excellent way to prepare them. I often eat them like that. When they mature and the caps open you want to avoid eating the stipes, because they become unpleasantly fibrous.

Thanks again for all your help German Kahuna.  I'll take some snapshots of my finished dish and post here.  I plan on storing these in my fridge and preparing on Sunday.

This is a GREAT forum!

I still have these shrooms in my fridge.  I want to eat them, but now I'm afraid to... should I throw them out?  I don't think I can do a spore print.
