Is it normal for myc to grow OVER the dry verm layer? It looks all cob-webbed and shit. 6 out of 7 have these!

I almost always have myc. poke up through my dry verm layers. If it is cobweb it will eat the whole layer up in one day.

that's common with cakes with a dry verm layer. more than likely it's mycelium.

Not always, if you're lucky you can push it back with H2O2 misting but cobweb is very persistant I've seen folks mist 3-4 times a day only to have it keep growing, some are lucky though.

What about putting the cake in a bowl and then pouring in H2O2 just high enough to cover the verm layer that is contam'd? The rest looks like healthy myc.

If you boil it you will kill the mushroom mycelium, it dies at around 106 farenheit. Also, H2O2 is a last resort as it causes tissue damage to the mycelium, probably won't kill it, but it can do a lot of damage. You could cut off infected areas of your cake, but chances are there are cobweb spores all over in that jar. I would personally just throw it out, too much hassle for something that will most likely stay contaminated. You said you're getting more spores right? If so just ditch them, you can always start again, and yes if you sterilize a syringe you can reuse them as much as you like.

If you try to save it, slice off big chunks. Don't be gentle. Give the clean piece a dunk in 10% h202 overnight.
You'd be better off just taking a tissue sample and trying to spawn it to grain or agar. Find a nice clean piece, soak in 10% h202 and drop it in a grain jar in a glovebox.
h202 does burn the myc a little, but it also oxygenates the tissue and causes it to regenerate very quickly. If you go over 10% tho you get a lot of heat released and it foams up a lot...not desirable. Use a marble sized sample or so. The peroxide won't kill a good sized piece.
edit: 10% solution of 3% peroxide...

Thats usually used if you are fruiting, and just started to get cobweb mold. You spray down with H2O2 in order to try to get a flush or 2 out of it before the cobweb takes it over. Sometimes you will kill all the cobweb, and be fine. Since you are just in the incubation stage, its a lot better to just start over that way you know there is no contams.

Sorry to see the mold you've got in your jars; I am fairly new to cultivation but I personally would start over, since you may not achieve fruiting and if you invest more time and energy only to be disappointed...well, why not start fresh if you can afford to? is my thinking. GL

Seems silly to buy another syringe when you can find a clean piece of myc and grow it out.

yoiur dry verm layer must be getting wet if your getting shit growing in it.
I very rarely even have mushroom mycelium growing in my dry verm layer.
Make sure that your jars are out of the water while steaming/pressure cooking and you have a good foil lid ontop aswell as micropore tape/masking tape.
if your putting the foil back on after inoculation and leaving it on tight during colinisation, moisture evaporating from your sub can moisten the verm.
Build yourself a glovebox.

Dude dont use verm at all. If the verm gets wet it will grow all kinds of nasty shit. Just add normal PF tek substrate, dont add a verm filter. Drill four holes in the lid and use micropore tape. Or drill five holes, four self sealing injection ports and one hole in the center with micropore tape for gas exchange. Thats the best way to do it. The PF tek was good for its time but a modded PF tek is even better. No verm filter is needed. Just add self sealing injection ports and micropore tape and its nearly flawless.
