Oyster Myc eats Verm?
    #11029966 - 09/09/09 08:12 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I did the dunk and roll tek. I've been doing some little experiments just for myself with my little fellers, but nothing major.

Experiments such as, Directly misting cakes, silly things etc.

Their home is a sterlite tub with plenty of breathing holes, and about 4 inches of nice and moist perlite. Their resting on some aluminum foil as reccomended by pf tek.

Anyways I've seen some pictures that show oysters still with the verm from the dunk and roll and some without both while fruiting. I'm not sure what the difference is, but my osyter myc is either starving or something is wrong?

I don't see traditional primordia but my cakes are getting fatter kind of like a melted marshmellow in a microwave, haha. Is this normal? I've never really encountered this before.

I am hypothesizing these two probabilities:
1. My 4oz jars are not suitable for oysters and they are STARVING.
2. They are pinning/forming primordia?

any insight? Hopefully RR sees this

I can take pictures but my camera sucks so it prolly isn't worth it.

What they look like now:

Notice how uncylindrical they are, and how blob-like?

What they look like before:

If this is a serious problem please lemme know asap. I was thinking about stacking them incase the problem was lack of myc mass(not sure if that's even possible?).

Thanks for any ideas/advice.

Okay so I picked some of the blobbiest ones up and they leaked water, so I put them on dry aluminum foil sheets and increased FAE. I am wondering if they are over hydrated? The blob's myc is super fluffy but very white so I don't think it's a contamination...

Beats me. I'd like to know myself. The only thing that I could find was a mention of introduction to fruiting conditions a tad too early. The post in question had "bloated tissue" growing from the cake, but the cake itself wasn't bloated.

I found that here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10476013#10476013

Bump this post once a day till you get an answer. :goodluck:

Mushroom mycelium will consume vermiculite as food, so that explains the colonization.  They shouldn't drip when you pick them up, so you're doing the right thing to dry them out somewhat.  Give them a few minutes per day of direct sunlight and keep up with lots of fresh air.  Oysters on pf cakes generally pin within a few days of birthing.  They're much faster than cubes.

Yeah this is weirding me out and the search function is yielding me nothing. I've grown several oysters on PF cakes before and I've never seen this before... But the myc has definitely consumed or covered the verm.

I don't think it's a matter of not being fully colonized before birthing. These things were fc'ed for 5 days(if my memory serves), then dunked for 24 hours.

It's a blue oyster culture btw. That shouldn't change anything but I'm trying to provide as much info as possible.

Edit nvm thanks RR, I will procede as you say. I'll update with success or failure .

P.S. they've been in the fruiting chamber for 2 days now going on there 3rd, so hopefully these are just fat pins or something.

I am wondering now if it is some kind of contamination...
Some of my cakes have developed a lighter flufier version on top of them. I suspect cobweb mold.

Needless to say I buried the suspected three of having cobweb mold with a little tombstone. :frown:

These are probably the cakes I tried to donut tek on(putting verm in the middle of the cake).
