PF strain growers, I have a question...
    #1103310 - 12/02/02 09:07 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I have held off on my cultivation experiment because I will not be able to care for my cakes during the x-mas season, and I was wondering how long it would take from innoculation till birthing for a 1/2 pint canning jar to more or less colonize the jar. Ideally I would like the jars to be more or less colonized by January 12th of January. If I began these cakes around December 18th, would they be more or less fully colonized? And if they happened to colonize quickly would leaving them in the jars for a week or two hurt them? Im planning on birthing them on January 12th but I will hold off till after the X-mas break if they will have problems. I plan on letting them sit in a dark closet over the break, but will have someone check on them every day or so to pitch out any contaminated ones. So what do you guys and gals think? Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Your cakes should fully colonize in that period of time if incubated under the proper conditions. If they happen to finish early, leaving them in the jars is no problem. Just keep the jars sealed and in the dark to avoid pinning.

I agree. You should be ok as long as they don't pin. Then you would have mushrooms growing all crammed up in the jars. You wouldn't want that. Just keep them in the dark and you should be fine.
