Karo vs. Honey LC's - a standardized comparison

I decided to take a Golden Teacher syringe from Ralph's, make a few honey and karo LC's, and see which is better via a controlled experiment.

There are 4 karo (2.5/50mL) and 5 honey (2.5/75mL), all in half-pint jars.
They are shaken once daily and incubated at around 80F in this bin:


Karo at 2 days:


Karo at 4 days:


Karo at 6 days:


Honey at 2 days:


Honey at 4 days:


Honey at 5 days:


It looks like the honey lc has used most of the nutes by this point. Note how much yellower the fresh pint lc is:


Most of the karo lc's show no growth past the day 6 photo. Honey seems to have outperformed Karo under these conditions.  Growth in the honey lc was a bit faster and the mycelium seem healthier in the honey than in the karo.

When withdrawing syringes, I noticed the karo lc was thicker and much more likely to clog my 18.5G needles

So I think I'm going to go with honey for now. I took 10cc's from a healthy honey lc and nocced up another pint of honey lc in a quart jar. After that its on to my first grow :grin:

I was wondering about switching to Karo after trying honey and brown rice syrup with mixed results (BRS colonized LC faster than honey, but honey colonized WBS faster, at least in my experience, and the honey contamed sooner but that could totally be my fault) so thank you for this post! :thumbup:

I on the other hand have the exact opp with using karo or honey

Just seems like my honey takes like 3 days longer but it could just be the ratio Im useing good work

Do you remember your ratio? For the LCs I did in my BRS vs. Honey experiment I used 14cc/300cc honey and 2cc/300c BRS. My new LCs are 9cc/200cc honey--comparable to the OP's ratios--and I'm waiting on results for that one.

I love using honey. I was wondering why your honey/water ratio was less than that of the karo, and wouldn't that affect the results? and your karo ratio is higher than I would think is ideal, but I don't use karo so there might be something I don't know. as far as I'm aware of it's best to err on the lower side of 4% as higher sugars slow colonization, which may account for your results.

Well I worked with half pint jars.

I then filled the jars with distiled water about a little over half water then I took a tabel spoon for both(karo/honey)

And my karo after 2 or 3 days was doin great and my honey took like 3 days longer to show signs

I might have to use less honey I think

Google says 1 US tablespoon = 14.7867648 cc which seems a lot for a half-pint.

ive noticed no difference between the two.  My Jars injected with each side by side showed pretty similar growth.

Those ratios for karo (2.5/50mL) and honey (2.5/75mL) are from a "cookbook" or something in the archives.

I guess if you use different ratios or strains of cubensis your results may vary.
My results were definite though - all the honey lc's out performed all the karo's.

It seems reasonable. Honey is a more complex and diverse food source. Karo is pretty much just corn sugar (dextrose).

I use dextrose at 2% by weight, with malt and usually yeast or a bit of potato flakes (1/4 tsp each for 500 mL water).
Mycelium loves it. :crazy2:

i shot up 3 honey lc's and 2 of them made it and are doing good,honey may be better then karo i think, if karo is just dextrose alone and honey contains antibacterial and anti fungal agents this may benefit the growth of mycelium !these pics hear are about 3 weeks,and this is the honey i used!
