Does the size of the vermiculite matter?
    #11026986 - 09/09/09 12:10 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I bought a couple of bags of vermiculite but didn't realize until I got home that it was very fine. It's not floury, but it's just a little bigger than sand. Would this be alright to use for my substrate?

Yeah, it'll work. I've heard a lot of debate on fine vs. coarse, have used both. Coarse seems to colonize a bit faster, fine seems to hold a bit more moisture, but at the end of the day, they'll both work.

Just try not to pack the fine verm down too much in the jar.

I did the same thing as you when I first started, It all worked out for me.
However it was suggested to me to go get medium and to save the fine for your filter layer.

You want the medium for your sub mixture to allow room for the mycelium to expand with ease.

Like I said it will work but medium would be better:thumbup:
