Bulk substrate too wet - monotub
    #11022593 - 09/08/09 05:09 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I am starting my first grain bulk grow, and I think I have too much water in my bulk. I am using a monotub/shotgun tub. Any suggestions on how to let it dry out a bit without contaming? Also, I do not have a hydrometer, however there is condensation on the inside of the tub (90-100% relative humidity).

4:1 bulk/grain

70% coco coir
25% worm castings
5% gypsum

Do you have a hygrometer?

How wet is your substrate? Squishy? Can you just lift the lid a crack and let it air out?

Don't have one of those either.

When loading it from pasturization I tried to get about the same moisture content as a PF cake.

Will opening it before it is fully colonized risk contam?

Well, if it's too wet, it won't colonize. So contams are a moot point.
Generally, you make bulk substrate to field capacity. If yours is wetter than that, you'll want to do something about it.

Now, when you say monotub/shotgun tub, what do you mean exactly? Have a pic?

Don't have a pic handy, but I'm sure you can figure out what it is from a description.

70 qt tub. 18 1" holes stuffed with pollyfill. bottom 4" wrapped with duct tape to stop side-pinning.

So it doesn't have shotgun-style holes? Just polyfil holes like a regular monotub?

In that case, I'd say lay a clean towel or light sheet over it, and remove the polyfil until it dries to your satisfaction. And the mycelium's satisfaction, of course.

monotub is not a shotgun tub.

This is your first monotub, correct?  How many days has it been colonizing?

I would leave it alone for at least it's first week, and if you notice the mycelium growing, than it will be fine.  I was worried with my first tubs, because it seemed that a lot of moisture was collecting on the surface of the substrate.  I waited a total of 14 days, and 100% colonized.  I also use a four parts bulk on part spawn ratio, but I use 18 gal tubs.

I have encountered the same problem in the past, my solution was to place the tub in front of a fan for about 1-2 hours a day until enough moisture dried up to my satisfaction.
