GOP Lawmaker: Make Congress Give Up Health Perks
    #11022673 - 09/08/09 05:23 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Yet another example of our "Do as I say, not as I do" Congress. How many of you are aware that our Congress frequently exempts themselves from the laws and programs they attempt to foist upon the rest of us?

Edit: And before the "Oh... it's Newsmax" clowns chime in, does it really matter where it came from?

GOP Lawmaker: Make Congress Give Up Health Perks

Rep. John Fleming, R-La., wants lawmakers to be compelled to enroll in the same reformed healthcare plan that they would like to foist upon the American people.

Fleming, a physician, is the driving force behind House Resolution 615, an enactment he says “will offer members of Congress an opportunity to put their money where their mouth is, and urge their colleagues who vote for legislation creating a government-run healthcare plan to lead by example and enroll themselves in the same public plan.”

The outspoken Fleming, who has consistently made the rounds of the TV circuits discussing healthcare reform, says on his Website that over the last few weeks, the members of Congress and the American people have finally come to know the details of the Administration's proposed healthcare plan.

“Call it whatever you like, I believe this proposal is nothing more than government-run healthcare,” Fleming charges. “As a physician, I am amazed at the number of bureaucrats in this House who are quick to claim a government-run healthcare plan is the reform this country needs.”

Fleming notes that under the current draft of the Democrat healthcare legislation, members of Congress are curiously exempt from the government-run healthcare option, keeping their existing health plans and services on Capitol Hill.

“If Members of Congress believe so strongly that government-run healthcare is the best solution for hard working American families, I think it only fitting that Americans see them lead the way,” he challenges.

The best medicine for all, however, Fleming argues is contained in a bill he co-sponsored called “The Empowering Patients First Act.”

His “Patients First” bill, he maintains, contains all the essential elements of good healthcare reform -- including expanding private insurance to all Americans who want it, removing pre-existing illnesses, portability, subsidies to the working poor, access to excellent primary and specialty care and lawsuit reform.

What’s more, the yeoman heavy-lifting reform chores are all accomplished, he says, “without a government takeover, gutting Medicare, long lines, bureaucrats interfering in the sacred doctor-patient relationship, and it is budget neutral.”

Fleming practiced family medicine for 33 years before becoming a Representative.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

America's debt problem is a "sign of leadership failure"

We have "reckless fiscal policies"

America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.

Americans deserve better

I agree with this.  It always seemed strange to me that these elected officials who are already men and woman of comfortable lives also get absurd perks.

IMO, the only federal employees who should receive these sorts of benefits should be military, CIA, FBI, and Foreign Service Officers. If you're willing to put your life on the line for your country, you should have better benefits than some asshole who doesn't even read the bills he votes for.

We have given our Politicians the keys to the candy store, because they are special!  What is needed is for the citizens to stop electing all of these crooks, and find people who care for their brothers and sisters. No more free rides!
