I think the thickness of the case also play a role,
,,,The fruits might not be as big

This has been asked a million times.

General consensus seems to be that for a given amount of substrate the results will be the same.  the limiting factor is moisture content. Give a cake enough water and it will yield exactly the same as that same cake crumbled up and cased.

when fruiting giant cakes all the moisture seems to pool at the bottom and you get crappy pinsets on top.

Off topic in advanced mycology.  Moved to cultivation.

This gets asked at least once per week and often turns into a pissing match with each person thinking he's right and the other guy is wrong.  Everyone has his own opinion, but with surface area vs thickness, there's points of diminishing returns both ways.

Experiment and find the depth vs surface area that works best for you.
