Easiest way to invest oil?
    #11022362 - 09/08/09 06:41 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

What is the easiest way to invest $1000 in oil?

Do I have to choose a specific company or can I invest in the barrels themselves?

Can I go through my bank?

What are common mistakes?

dxo, oil, uso, dig are etf funds that track oil prices. You need a brokerage  account. Oil is pretty volatile, I wouldn't recommend it as a long term investment.

Oil commodity futures options FTW!  J/K My projection if it is worth anything is that the price of oil is going to stabilize for the next 3 - 6 months with a slight down turn.  Oil companies are normally a safe bet, even if the price of oil drops because they are basically fully vertically integrated. The real question is to get foreign or American?  If you think the value of the U.S. dollar is going to drop buy foreign oil companies and reap the benefits of the exchange rate.  Other wise buy American, they are subsidized and will never fail.

Buy some shares of KYE.  The divi is still over 9%.  Some of it will be return of capital since the MLPs can pass along their tax write offs to the share holders.

Tbh, I've felt investing in cryptocurrencies is a safer bet than oil. At least, there are a number of people holding pen and paper all ready to dive into the crypto world

Does your car run on crypto?

OP: pick a big major would be your best bet. XOP, BP, CHV, SU or the XLE.
Futures are best way to play oil, but you are looking at a larger initial investment and because of the risk it should make up a smaller portion of your portfolio.

I thought MLPS had some problems under the new tax rules which is why they have all sold off so much, but I haven't looked much into it.

I looked a bit into the MLPs under the new tax changes and they are going to have some problems in the future as they are rolled into corporations. Enbridge took the steps today to bring all it's MLPS and the Canadian income trusts, which as basically the same thing, into a single corporation from the 5 separate entities it currently is.
