If there is no god, why do we have so many churches?

No correlation.

speaking of that.
do you know all the wars and hatred that apparently came from the name of god?

and you say he is a loving god...i have read the bible and the hate is astounding.
you idiots go singing around "god loves you"
when in the bible there is nothing but death and backstabbing and destruction of cities.
there is nothing in there that says god loves you.

The bible isnt literal, it teaches morals, which sometimes include unsavory actions and situations in order to teach values that humans try to live upon.  God is far to complex for any person to understand.  Words cannot describe the desires of God but simplify a message that we can understand.  I think it is amusing however how much christian bashing there is in this topic opposed to atheist bashing.  Even if God is not real the morals upon which the bible conveys would do the world so much good if people would just understand the message  :bow2:

come on everyone aren't we all here for the same reason, the love of mushys.  We are a community =) no need for hatin, just discussion.

Just responding to the first bit.

Does holding one irrational belief make one an irrational person? Or to use your word, if one holds one stupid belief does that make them a stupid person? This seems to be what you're suggesting.

And atheists argue with SO much evidence right? And one could argue that atheism is a copout dor death also since it allows one not to think about it.

I just find it funny that those who don't believe in any God whatsoever spend their lives failing to disprove other religions

Not only that, but they tear down Christians that try to force their beliefs upon others, yet, everytime I look, they're trying to force their beliefs (or lack thereof) on THEM...

And to this day, I've only heard ONE good reason for someone NOT to believe in God (or any other deity, for that matter)...excuses like "If there is a God, then how come we got AIDS?" or "If God exists, then why do people die?", bulls***t for the most part...if a doctor chooses not to perform open heart surgery, I suppose that means *gasp*...HE DOESN'T EXIST!!!

The only acceptable reason for not believing is *ding ding ding* "Because I choose not to"...just accept it for what it is and stop trying to "recruit"; especially considering how you claim to have no following to promote...unless ur a nihilist, stop being so closed-minded & claiming with certainty that ANYTHING can be explained(specifically in reference to materialism) cause U sure as hell wont be one to explain any of it!

I'm not atheist but I'm not religious either, I'm a spiritual person whose belief is similar to a multiple of religions just without the unified belief system or the ridiculous idea that one's beliefs should be taken from the book. I believe only what makes sense to me. The only time I find myself arguing against religion is when someone who is religious is trying to shove their beliefs down my throat or when a subject like this is brought up in a public forum.

There is no way to prove one way or the other if God exists or not. So many people have a different idea of what God is and what God is not, so it makes sense that people argue about this subject often.

Religious beliefs aside, a spiritual belief that is accepting of other people's beliefs is one that is universally more understood and accepted.

Nobody likes it when you shove your beliefs down their throat but expressing your beliefs or standing up for yourself is not only expected but more likely to be understood.

zen buddy makes a good point, and it is nice to see somebody with the same view system as myself.  As I take this journey through life I create my own religious beliefs, which can be seen in a blend of religious systems, but are original and unique to my own mind.  But even with these beliefs of my own I cannot detest the views of others on the basis that nobody really knows what the deal is  I just am not down for downing others on the basis of their beliefs. Maybe if we all just eat like a half o of mushys together we can all figure it out! haha

, do you not understand that the burden of proof is on the claimant? It's self-evident that this world is populated by billions of neurotic apes who overindulge in their imaginations, most of them to the point that they believe something that doesn't self-evidently exist exists. Don't you understand that since there even is a debate, since there are people who don't believe, that it isn't a self-evidently existing phenomenon? :what:

Nobody escapes death anxiety, not even atheists, but at least they rationalize; rationality is the atheists' evidence.

I dont have death anxiety , and I know plenty of people who don't either.  While I will agree that at some point everyone does it is something that I have come to accept. Why fret over something that is out of your control?  This will only burden the one thing you do know exists, the here and now.

Occam's Razor, yo.

If two ideas have equal explanatory power but one is more convoluted than the other, an intelligent man will work from the simpler explanation. Imagining an omnipotent entity presiding over the universe is extraordinarily convoluted, and it doesn't explain anything about the world or help us to make even one single prediction. The God theory is unwieldy and useless.

If I were to explain gravity in terms of microscopic fairies which grab everything they can and drag it towards the ground, why on earth would you listen to me? You wouldn't. Compared to the idea that gravity is simply a fundamental force which acts on matter, the fairy idea is convoluted and, what's more, it actually explains LESS about gravity than the scientific model, because it opens up a whole litany of questions about the nature of these fairies, their motivation, etcetera. Talking about God is the same way -- it creates more questions than it answers, and by that criteria is a truly terrible theory. If God controls the universe, "he" must therefore not be subject to its rules of cause and effect, or else "he" wouldn't really be in control. Therefore, God must somehow be outside of the universe ... which, if true, completely undermines our understanding of what a "universe" is. Meanwhile, it doesn't explain a thing about what's actually going on in the universe. Have I made my point?

I fail to see how a non-sentient cause of the bang is more simple than a sentient cause of the bang.

Of course the historical gods of man are convoluted and crazy just like you mention, but now days god can be defined very carefully to avoid such pitfalls.

God is to the theist what nature is to the atheist.
We just start of with a different word.
Apart from that i see no difference.

Condition1 + Condition2 = Big Bang
Condition1 + Condition2 + God = Big Bang

1 fewer variable = mathematically simpler.
