Paranoia.
    #11018642 -

I've never really been in any serious car accidents, and I have my license but no car, so I don't really drive. For some reason, regardless of who's driving, I'm EXTREMELY paranoid in cars and have even lost a friend for "telling him how to drive" too much. If I'm high, I have to keep my eyes closed most of the time if I'm in a car because I'm so terrified. I'm never paranoid in any other situation; I even stay relatively calm around cops. :P I can't even imagine what I'll be like when I have to drive myself around... what should I do?

I dont know what getting your license entails from where you are posting from... but have you driven before?... once you drive a fair bit you start to come to terms with how a car actually handles and therefore realise that city driving is very safe...

you should go out onto a country road (pref where there is lots of twists and turns) so that you can push your limits a bit... after that normal driving will be a cake walk:tongue2:

Try to get a bigger picture. Look at it statistically. You are more likely to die from having a neutron star fall on your head than to die in an automobile accident...

But yeah, you just have to drive more; clock up some miles on the old odometer. Nothing beats experience!

it's a 50/50 chance with either scenario

Yes, I've driven a little and I'm not too bad.

Eh, I'm a little more worried about all my friends not wanting to drive me anywhere because I freak out so much. I think I'll be okay driving myself... sort of.

Do you have any problems with motion sickness; an unpleasant sensation when in motion?

Also, technically, what you suffer from is not Paranoia. It's either Amaxophobia (the fear of riding in a car), or Motorphobia (the general fear of automobiles). Some people might think it's Automatonophobia, but that is the fear of ventriloquist's dummies, animatronic creatures, and wax statues.

So it might be an issue of lack of control and/or lack of trust in others? Maybe you need to put yourself in situations where your life is completely in someone else's hands. Have you tried rock climbing/mountaineering?

Nope, no motion sickness at all. I'm probably just scared of my friends driving, in general. I don't think I'm scared of dying in an accident... maybe, I don't know.

Yeah, unfortunately being in a society means that you have to trust and rely on your friends. So, try to let go a little bit and relax, and choose your friends damned carefully...

One night my friend drove us into a tree going 60 MPH. It's been 7 years and I still suffer from bad PTSD.It gets very intense now and again. I feel comfortable only if I am driving. Subconsciously I watch the driver in the corner of my eye so I know the moment they are not paying attention to the road. I LOVE driving... but I do not like being a passenger.
