Another Indentification Request
    #1101578 - 12/01/02 06:26 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

These were found in Colorado. I was greatly suprised to find them this far into winter. December 1st and mushrooms are still popping up. I have little to no experience identifying mushrooms so any help would be greatly appreciated. The area I found these in were moist from sprinklers/run off. I found then growing at the base of an old tree stump. When I pulled them up the bottoms were in soil. I took a spore print and after a couple of hours nothing showed up, I am going to let them sit for another day before I give up on them. Heres the pics I took.

The spore print turned out white. If I'm not mistaken honey mushrooms are edible, of course I'll wait for a few more opinions. I couldn't help but "tear" them apart, lol, as I started to pull them up they began to fell apart. Such tragedy.

Upon further observations I doubt they are they honey mushroom. I searched the web for pics of the Armillaria mellea and mine looked similar but there are some major visual differences.

The veil is what threw me off as well. Thank you very much for the identification. Perhaps I will have to check that club out.

Been gone for a couple days with computer problems.

Anyway, I agree with the ID. Those look like Armillaria ostoyae (a bit old). When they get older, the ring often disappears. Although they are edible, those look older than I would eat. If you do decide to eat them, make sure you cook them thoroughly.

The next meeting of the Colorado Mycological Society will be in March (I think the second Monday). I'll verify the date when we start getting closer.

Happy mushrooming!

Dr. Hal Burdsall, who specializes in lignicolous fungi, told us a few years ago that the genus Armillaria now includes only those mushrooms once grouped under the name Armillaria mellea, but now split into several species. In Colorado we only have 2 of them Armillaria ostoyae and Armillaria gallica, and A. gallica is fairly rare here. He examined several collections and said all of them locally were Armillaria ostoyae. So in Colorado the first guess is Armillaria ostoyae and Armillaria gallica would be identified by its cortinaceous veil.

Dr. Tom Volk has a nice key to the genus here. Based on his key, we probably can't be sure without a microscope.
