Jars no longer bright white? PEnvy after 4 weeks of colonization.
    #11018385 - 09/08/09 12:31 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Just curious why these jars are no longer white and when I should fruit them...

The black dots are hard chunks of what I believe to be vermiculite being pushed out of the cake. These jars were once very white and as time goes on theyre becoming less and less white.

I am dunking it and am going to try and fruit it this week.

The black shit is hard but will crumble if picked at. It is stuck to the cake. I washed my hands and saturated the spot i emptied the jar on with rubbing alcohol. I have about 4 more jars like this.

A clearer pic would still help but it doesn't look good to me.

Is the off white color like a coffee with tons of creme in it?

Also how does it smell?

I posted a newer clearer pic right above your post. If that isn't clear enough I am sorry thats the best I can do with the cam I have.

There is no smell.

That pic is still blurry.

Sorry.  When looking at something so fine you need a good clear pic.  Things aren't always what they seem in blurry pics.

Two suggestions, a tripod for the camera so it doesn't move when snapping a pic and let it do the work.  Or even a better camera.

Here is a pic from a really cheap $89.00 digital camera from a small tripod.

I understand. I am using a camera phone heh. The cake has been rubbed and dunked so it may look a little different.

I see.  That pic is a little better but not much.

How does it smell?

This is AS good as it is going to get lol. I used a custom light set up and put the cam on the flat surface for the picture.

There is no smell at all. I take a huge whiff and smell nothing but air.

The black worries me. They should smell pretty strongly of fresh mushrooms if they're healthy.

At this point, I would toss them. That's just me though. If you're not worried about contaminating your work area, and you keep an eye on it for health reasons, you could just try and fruit it.

Yeah there is no mushroom smell.

I would like to retry PFtek. Not sure what went wrong exactly.

Will stay posted on my fruiting of this one while I let the others colonize for a week or so more.

OK.  Now that is a picture!

No smell is good.  But even better would be a nice clean mushroomy smell.

But with that said the off white myc looks bad. I've seen this when I've had a jar that simply took too long to colonize 100%.  It turned a really light coffee color.  I can't find any info on that specific conam if it even is one, but the cakes died a week or so after noticing the off white color.

The black spots could be Verm but I've never seen black verm except when using the New Moon syringes from ET (non-sponsor).  This is what worries me the most.

Try the Contam FAQ first...

And here:Contams

The bottom line for most contams is "When in doubt, throw it out".

nah it's cool. Just wondering how they got like that. I followed everything and I had 0 contam rate out of 12 jars now theyre fucked. I have like 1 jar without these black things.

I am moving pretty soon. I am going to do a solid cleaning of my room tomorrow. I ousted right after I did it but I will wash everything that is in the room and wipe the walla with 70%. You live and learn.
