puffy myc monotub
    #11012232 - 09/06/09 10:55 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

i spawned a few quarts to hpoo/coir/verm. the mycelium colonized very fast. its been fully colonized for a week. the mycelium is growing in huge puff balls, reminds me of cumulous clouds. some of the myc has taken over one or two of the polyfill holes. it is growing in dense masses. in weird fluffy balls. i pulled the tub away from one of the sides and the mycelium has completely formed into a thick mass. it reminds me of rubber. the tub looked a bit yellow at first but thats going away.  the myc that grew through the polyfill has an orange tinge though. threres no gray so its not cobweb (the only contam i know how to identify) and there are no bad odors...

i know pics would help but im not able to do that.

im guessing either its genetic or i failed to introduce fruiting in time and its sever overlay.

any thoughts?

this is my second bulk attempt and i cant find anything conclusive using the search.

Sounds funny, but if its fluffy mycelium its not overlay. I didn't even know bulk sub could overlay, I was thinking it's usually casing layers that do so.

What strain? Does the myc appear dense and smooth surfaced in places?

strain: EQ
spawn: grain
inoculation of spawn: grain LC

yea well it does seem weird. im just giving it massive FAE for now.
hopefully it will start to pin.

and yes is seems dense AND smooth in places. almost even slick like white rubber. other places its cottony like clouds.

the myc seems to be trying to climb around, and some of it is very rhizomorphic.

its just not forming pins...

-edit-

its actually formed a incredibly dense BLANKET of mycelium on the surface of the sub...

This would have been my advice.

is it ok to put a fan blowing on the tub overnight?

or is that overkill?

at this point ill try anything before i throw it outside.

i dont want to give up just yet.

Nah, just really loose polyfil and a fan on in the room (facing a different direction) should do it. Careful of your humidity dropping.

I hate when this happens. The smooth dense places won't ever pin. But if its still fluffy in places you still have a chance.

Last resort could be scraping and soaking in a light solution of h202.

What's the affinity for H2O2 here?

It thwarts mycelial growth and doesn't stop rival mold from germinating. The only benefit it will give you is stopping cobweb mould that is already spreading or trying to kill bacterial infestations, which tubs RARELY get IME.

I've found mycelium bounces back pretty robust and pins quickly after a light h202 burn.

It's not that c02 buildup causes vegetation, it's that low 02 inhibits pinning. H202 breaks down fairly quickly into water and 02. My theory is that the extra 02 bubbling out the surface of the dampened myc promotes growth and pinning.

I also treat cuts on my skin regularly w/ peroxide cuz I believe in addition to killing bacteria, it's oxygenating the surrounding tissue. Seems to heal faster.

Maybe I'm crazy. Try it out tho the next time you got something being stubborn, not wanting to pin. Or try scraping some stroma off and treating w/ h202. I think it helps.

edit: some quick research shows that I'm not alone in this view. This by no means confirms my hypothesis, but it does show that I'm not completely stupid.

ill update the post to let you all know.

thanks for all the advice.
