ID request - Brown indented cap
    #11015007 -

Habitat: found these near some blackberry bushes next to a pond.

They smelled kind of meaty, almost like cooked shitake.

Looking at the stipe I would say it is a Collybia species.

Maybe a Gymnopus.  Do these have a white spore print?

Its not Collybia because those only grow from other rotten mushrooms.

German Kahuna, they do look like Collybia, in the old sense. It turned out that the genus was polyphyletic and it was split up. Since the type species for Collybia was one of the tiny all-white guys that rot old mushrooms, the genus Collybia now consists only of mushrooms like that. The rest of the genus pretty much got split up into Gymnopus, Rhodocollybia, and Dendrocollybia.

Roy Halling has an outstanding page that will help anybody that really wants to sort through Collybias (in the old sense). It's at:

Happy mushrooming!
