So, this is my first batch. I have five jars with varying degrees of strange that I'm not sure is an indication of something bad or not. I've seen the teks and FAQs on contam and I read half of this forum yesterday, but I can't find pics that look much like my jars, so I'm still not sure. Please help?

This one shows the weird brown spot, and here is another one in the same jar:

Now the two below show a different jar, this one with a very strange, translucent, pearly film on the jar. Behind the film on each jar is a white spot of otherwise healthy looking mycelium.

And finally, two more pics of what doesn't look like any mycelium I have seen. However, it appeared all at once but hasn't grown much bigger. It kind of looks powdery, not really ropey like the mycelium growing in the same jar.

Sorry for the poor lighting. It's raining outside. I put foils back over the jars to keep anything from spreading, if it could. I don't want to toss these out on a whim, someone with more knowledge give me a hand, please!
Thanks!

On the top two pics? Yeah, I was afraid of that. Any opinion of the rest? Thanks!

Yeah it could be bacteria or it could just be brown rice flour that clumped up and didn't mix into the verm very well. Then it sort of made a goo spot near the glass. That's a tough one. If it grows you are probably toast. The second problem is probably a problem.
I can see your tumbprint in pictures three and four... in case you are woried about that sort of thing. Picture four has what looks like green mold in the top right of the picture.
Finally, as a general rule if there is a distinct border between the regular mycelium and this new pattern that is usually bad. In the case of the above pictures I'd say it doesn't look normal.

Looks like bacteria to me also, the substance is way to wet man :/ did you put aluminium foil on jars while sterilizing?

about the thumbprint -- these are oyster mushrooms, so i don't care. gotta start somewhere and i bought these spores in town. i wanted to do the tek to the T before i try something harder.
yeah, there is too much water in the substrate. i followed the recipe from the RR brf tek, but the video i watched either didn't say or i didn't catch that i needed to remove the tin foil before placing in the incubator. they did have tin foil on while sterilizing, yes. the rest aren't nearly this wet. only a few seemed to have had this problem. in fact, the rest of them actually sealed like i was pressure cooking them, except for these five. (i got 54 total).
oh and that's a reflection of the siding off my house, not bg mold. i checked and double checked until i noticed the angle of light. so its at least not infected with that jazz.
as an update, though, the two with the weird opalescent film to them have mycelium which has overtaken the areas in question, and the weird opalescent film has disappeared. so i'm waiting to see on those. the ones with the brown spots -- they haven't grown, and i'm beginning to think it might be brf that clumped together. as for the third one, which i feared might be cobweb, it hasn't gotten any bigger. when i opened it up outside, it smelled like brf that was wet. but i got to thinking, that was the very first jar i inoculated, and being that it was also the first time i'd used a syringe, i ended up fucking up and squirting haphazardly and way too much of my load in that one jar. maybe that's why its not pinpoints of growth.
thanks for the info, guys. and its woman, not man.

Yeah? Five seemed like a lot to me! I'm glad it doesn't seem that bad. Of course, they aren't even a quarter colonized yet, so knowing my luck, I'm sure that number will increase.

On pics 3 and 4- is the film you describe inside the jars? Was it there as soon as they came out of sterilization or did it just appear all of a sudden? I see hard water stains from the boiling/PC. All my jars looked like that until I started adding a splash of vinegar to the boil water.
first pics sure look like a clump of BRF to me, but if it grows, turns black or starts to smell it's trash.
Last set could be mold- I've heard of trich having a grainy appearance- just wait and see on those.

wow i hadn't considered hard water stains. we have a lot limestone in our water here, which can make those same markings on regular glasses. good call, thanks! that would also explain why they disappeared. they were definitely on the inside of the jar, but as soon as the mycelium touched it, the moisture (i'm guessing) made it disappear. but now it definitely looks like limestone.
/shudder
trich. not good. that jar squicks me, so i think i'll just throw it out, and even if it happens to be good, screw it anyway. at least the others still seem fine!
are there not a lot of "buns" at this sausage fest? :P
