Beginner Questions

Hi everyone, new to the forums, and growing things in general and after reading around the forums a bit and the main PF-tek I have a few questions that I either didn't see answers to or saw conflicting information about so well here they are:
1. How tight should the lid be during sterilization? The main PF-tek page doesn't really say, I figure it needs to be not completely sealed during sterilization so the steam can actually do something but and am not sure. (Just using a stove pot and lid, no pressure cooker)
2. During incubation what (if anything) should I put over the lids? I have seen some things say nothing, some foil, some taping the holes, is one especially preferable? (Is tape even necessary at all? If covered with foil for sterilization im not seeing where it would be but maybe im missing something)
3. My spores have not arrived yet, is it best to inoculate within a day or can i make/sterilize my jars now without extra risk of contamination? If I can should they be stored at room temp or in the fridge?
Thanks in advance for the help, will probably have more questions as my process continues. (Maybe making this a log thread)

1. if you have holes in your lid and they are taped with some micro spore tape then keep the lid tight.
2. just leave micro pore tape on the lid dont put foil, if you have a dry layer of verm on top then you dont actually have to have anything on the holes but I recomend the tape.
3. Im not positive on this one but I would think the fridge would b your best bet.

1- not sure without having a pc
2-as long as you have a dry verm layer on top you dont need tape or tinfoil..they need oxygen anyways.
3-it should matter as long as they are steril they will still be steril in a day.

1. All the way tight, with holes in the lid, and foil covering it to prevent water from entering.
2. Take foil off after sterilization, wipe the lid off to get rid of excess moisture, and leave it like that.
3. I would wait on making the jars until spores arrive. Some people have done them early and kept them, but chances for success are better if you do it all at once.

I am a noob but I answered all my questions by researching. I can answer some of these for you even though I am still on my first batch ever. These are answers that I have heard from more experienced cultivators.
1. Lids should not be too tight. You don't want them too loose either make sure they will not be so loose that the lid will spin around later during handling of inoculation.
2. I have used band aids for taping the holes in the lids. This is because they come in sterile packaging and they are easy to use. (no scissors or trying to mess with tape and rubber gloves) I have seen others do the same.
3. The best thing to do (from what I hear) is to keep the spores in the fridge or under 80 degrees F. spores will die if too hot but they will last for a while if kept cool.

1. relatively tight, but don't make the mistake I made first time around, they were so tight I couldn't get them off, my wrist hurt for a day after birthing my first 10 jars, because I was too stubborn to bend them.
2. Up to you, people say the verm layer eliminates the threat of contams, so you can leave the inoculation holes uncovered, but I've never trusted that, so I always end up covering mine with micropore tape after inoculation. Just don't leave them covered with something that doesn't breathe, because the myc likes gas exchange.
3. Syringes can definitely last weeks, and likely months in room temp, but are supposed to last longer refrigerated. I'd leave them out if you're only waiting a day.

1.You really want them all the way tight, when you go to loosen them, give them a quick jerk type twist in the direction you want it to go that makes them come off every time for me.
2.Did I mention I've never had a PF jar contaminate using the dry verm without tape?
3. He said storing sterilized jars, not syringes.

1. Tight. But you can put the top on rubber side up... may help w/ opening later.
2. The dry verm layer works as a FILTER... jars need air exchange in order to colonize, but unfiltered air will contaminate the jar.
3. Do some jars early if you wish. Practice makes perfect. If they have not contaminated by the time your spores get there, that is a good sign... but BE SURE TO SAVE SOME SPORES JUST IN CASE YOU FUCK UP. N00bs fuck up often. Mistakes happen. Don't be left w/o spores.
4. Patience. If you do things right, these things will grow themselves. The more you do, the greater the risk of failure.

1. It dont matter! pressure will be same inside/outside jar during cooking. it wont seal up on u cuz of the holes.
2. keep holes open, its the whole point of having the dry verm layer
3. fridge is a dirty place to put em. they won't go bad, they're sterile! Leave foil covers on until u use em.

1. I leave them on loosely and achieve great results. I just lay them atop the jars.
2. I use masking tape. I take the tape off of the holes when the jar is 60-70% colonized then flip them.
3. Just wait until your spores arrive, trust me. Sterilize jars then inoculate the next day.
