PFtek rye/millet/verm quantity question--------
    #11009419 - 09/06/09 01:34 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Hello!

Do you think that WBS (sunflower seeds removed, thus consisting of millet and cracked corn) and all natural whole grain rye flour mixed with vermiculite would have a good result? What seems to be the best strategy for preparing such a substrate? If one were to prepare 4 1pint Ball mason jars, how much each of the WBS, rye flour, and vermiculite should I use?

Everything else seems to already be in order.

If your doing the PFtek just stick with 2 parts vermiculite to 1 part water and 1 part brown rice flour

I would leave out the rye flour and the cracked corn.

Mix the verm in at about 1 part for every 3 parts millet (soaked for 16-30 hours) and you should do very well.

I would if possible, but circumstances lead to situations that lead to evolutions. Do you think that using birdseed (millet) and rye flour, or even just rye flour instead of the BRF would create a problem? With everything else the same and strict aseptic technique being followed, do you think it would still allow for a failure?

Just don't use too much rye flour over your verm (go 3verm/1flour, to be safe), you could mix in the pre-soaked and rinsed grain at any amount.

Make sure the water content is right.  I would use the squeeze tek to be sure.

Do you think these ratios would be appropriate for 4- 1 pint jars?

Rye only: (going to do 2)

Verm: 4/3 cup
Water: 1/2 cup
Flour: 1/2 cup

Millet only: (going to do 1)

Verm: 1/2 cup
Water: 1/3 cup
Seed: 4/3 cup

Seed/Rye both: (going to do 1)
Verm: 1/2 cup
Water: 1/3 cup
Seed: 1 cup
Flour: 1/3 cup

Of course the amounts aren't going to be exact, they have to fit into a 1pint jar... but I don't think exactness is as important as a good general ratio, as well as the obvious aseptic technique to avoid contamination.

The water can depend on what grade verm you are using.  The most important thing (I guess almost as important as proper sterile tek) is proper moisture content.  That is why I recommend using the squeeze tek each and every time you mix up some sub (unless you are 100% sure of your mix).

Birdseed cakes don't work out.  They end up stalling (won't pin), or drying out, or cotamning or falling apart. brf/verm is pretty optimal.

If you feeling experimental. Experiment with the best ratio of brf to verm. It's very debatable what mix leads to optimal colonization. Try the pf ratio, try the mmgg (magic mushroom growers guide) ratio. Try 1:2, 1:3. Or experiment with creating a water reservoir in the cake.

Getting creative with the basic ingredients is more likely to hurt than help.

And let me offer you this tip, if you're going to use 1 pint jars, make sure to add another injection point to the middle or you'll get uncolonized or slow to colonize centers in your cakes.

Squeeze tek:  Mix your substrate well and when you feel it is ready to load into the jars pick a small amount of it up and squeeze it.  If water comes gushing out it is too wet, mix in some more verm.  Your consistency, or mix if you prefer, is right when you squeeze your substrate and only a few drops of water comes out, you want it moist, not wet.

This is simply not true.  I have grown millet/verm half pint cakes almost exclusively for the longest.

Simplicity and yield.

Not to mention that it makes great spawn for whenever I do bulk.
