Pinning question
    #11009664 - 09/06/09 02:18 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Well I have put my cake into a fruiting chamber about 9 days or so now and there are no sign's of pinning I keep it well hydrated and try to fan it at least 2-3 times a day and I always hydrate them after I fan them the only problem I have is keeping the temp. under control sometimes it will reach as high as 90' and at night drop to 68-70'.

Is the temp the main problem or should I fan them more?

did you leave the cakes a week after full colonization?

i did, and it still took 6 days to see pins, and 6 more for mature fruits.

yeah if you birth them as soon as they look fully colonized, it still takes a while for the interior of the cakes to colonise. could take a few weeks but they will pin.
The temp fluctuation might slow them down a tad but they should pull through fine.

If you did wait the few days after colonization then i have no I dea what might be keeping them. lol

Im a new grower and was getting poor pinsets on my cakes (2-5). I started setting my FC outside in direct sunlight for about five minutes every day on recommendation from RR's notes and mounted two LED light fixtures on the inside lid of my FC and they eXPLODED overnight. I have a feeling setting it outside is what really helped though. The temperature does sound like it might be a problem, while its definetly not going to get to cool 90 degrees seems way up there to me for a fruiting chamber. I think your growth and pinning would suffer and also make it much more succeptable to contaminents. So i would recommend tryin to keep that temp under 85 if nothing else and settn ur FC in sunlight for 5 minutes a day.

Heres my the LED lights I use if anyone cares

Incorrect information.  Once the outside is fully colonized, the inside is as well.  If you're curious, cut open a fully colonized cake and you'll see that this is the case.

The reason we wait a week after full colonization is to allow the mycellium a "digestion" period so that the mycelium can prepare the nutrients it has absorbed in preparation for fruiting.

Think about it like this, how well would you fare in a marathon if you had just eaten a very large meal?

I was having trouble getting pins from my first monotubs.  I had a 15 wat florecent spiral light.  I was fanning 4-5 times, and misting.

Someone told me more light would help, so I put a light above each one.  I used a lamp shade to keep it off the top of the mono, it sits about 3 inches off the top.  Its was then really bright in the tubs.  They pinned in 2 days after that.

Personally the only thing I got from the shotgun FC was dried out cakes... and low yields

Thats one thing I did not do with my fruiting chamber is put holes all through out it should I do this?
Its basically in a baileys chocolates container not the small ones but like the tubs that are about 1 1/2 feet high and about half a foot thick its not to big but the humidity stays high.
